Re-Read Favorites

  • Jun 28, 2010
These are all books I've read at least three times. All for different reasons. Some for the familiarity, and others to find something new. But I love all of them enough to keep coming back :D
1
House of Leaves
No matter how many times I read this, I will always find something new. It's so filled with hidden meanings and references, that it's pretty much impossible to find or know them all.
See the full review, "A Strange Trip To Insanity".
2
The Pilo Family Circus by Will Elliott
Evil clowns and a loosening grip on reality. Need I say more? Maybe a little. . . The characters and situations are so crazy and inventive that it just draws me in. Plus, the guy that wrote it has schizophrenia and was experimenting with non-sleep and non-medication while writing it. . . just try to throw yourself into whatever his mental state was at the time.
3
Ender's game cover
Great insight into the controlling relationship between adults and children in a sci-fi setting. Also, good themes of games, war, innocence, and politics--though the politics comes up much more heavily in following books.
4
Brave New World
I love dystopias. Huxley extrapolates science and its affects on society really well. Has the classic tech meets non-tech clash. Also, in dystopia fashion, the governments control over society and its citizens.
5
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Hilarious! A trilogy in five parts. I quote it all the time. I don't think it's possible for me to tire of it.
6
Pern: Harper Hall Trilogy
A brilliant world with memorable characters you can relate to. The fantastic is completely believable here, nothing feels contrived or out of place. I re-read for the familiarity and the excellent stories, most of the series, in fact. This trilogy is just the most re-read part.
7
Johnny The Homicidal Maniac: Director's Cut
Every once in a while I just need some weird, dark, comedic psychosis. This fits that need perfectly.

Great idea for a list! I need to reread #4 and I need to pick up #5!

Both are great! (although, most of my friends really dislike BNW). Hitchhiker's Guide is pretty easy to find too. . . there's always a few copies (sometimes even the huge master collection book) at the Half Price Books by my house :D

I love Hitchhiker's Guide - what a fun book! I still need to read the rest of the series. Nice idea for a list. Some people think I'm crazy when I reread books. Though, I find I'm doing that less these days because there are SO many books to be read!

I know what you mean! Both on the crazy and the SO many. I find that I reread things most when I'm in school. My poor brain can only handle so much new info at a time :P

I've got a TON of books that I've read twice but, try as I might, I can only think of two that I've read three times - the entire LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy and BARNABY RUDGE by Charles Dickens. LOTR I've read a full seven times, believe it or not!

Wow, I could only make it through the hobbit. . . once. I gave FotR an attempt, but they were walking through hefty chunks of landscape that I couldn't handle. I love the story, just can't read that much description.

Great list of re-reads! I might have to consider creating one myself...although...I love re-reading books. So, it would really be hard to narrow it down!

Thanks! There are plenty others that I've re-read a few times that I thought about putting on here. But these pretty much happen (at least partly so) every year :D

That's pretty cool. It's great to have a consistent list of re-reads like this. I would say mine are about the same type of regularity too.
