Fun Halloween Reads

  • Oct 11, 2010
Every October, I find myself in the mood for ghosts and witches and other things that go bump in the night. Here's a list of some of my favorite reads.
1
The Other
One twin's good, but the other.......Read this ages ago but have never forgotten it.
2
Harvest Home
Read this and you'll never look at a scarecrow as harmless again.
3
The Cure of Souls
An ancient English murder, with a victim who still walks - The Lady of the Bines.
See the full review, "The Devil and Merrily Watkins".
4
A Crown of Lights (Merrily Watkins Mysteries)
Interested in exorcism? You'll love this one.
See the full review, "new take on an old genre".
5
The Smile of a Ghost
There's more than one ghost in ancient Ludlow, and not all of them are dead.
See the full review, "Kindred Spirits".
6
Food for the Dead: On the Trail of New England's
Tired of fiction? They did believe in vamps in olde New England, and here's the proof.
See the full review, "food for the folklorist".
7
Vampire Legends of Rhode Island
Digging up the dead and stakes through the heart play a big role in this nonfiction study.
See the full review, "not merely legends".
8
Heart-Shaped Box: A Novel
A modern ghost story full of almost believable supernatural threats. Following Jude and Mary Beth as they scour first their intellects, then their instincts, and finally their very souls, trying desperately to evade the deaths that seem inevitable."
9
The House of the Seven Gables (Norton Critical
An original, written in the 19th century and still powerful. Expect blood.
See the full review, "Read this again".
10
The Darkest Part of the Woods
One of those novels that is more atmosphere than adventure. If you allow it to proceed at its own pace, it will weave its web around your mind. Subtle but effective, it's sense of threat and menace grows a bit with every chapter. I'll tell you, I sure wouldn't set foot in that woods.
See the full review, "open mind".
11
Turn of the Screw
Read this ages ago after seeing the movie, and have never, ever forgotten it. There's a reason it's a classic.
See the full review, "A real chiller".
12
Winter Rose Jennifer Donnelly
Dark and dreamlike, with more than a touch of magic.
13
The Lacemakers of Glenmarra
Some mystical happenings here. I included it for the more faint of heart, but it's a good story.
