I have been a proud owner of the Foodsaver V2840 model for a couple years now. I was tickled pink to try out the new "improved" V3835. The first thing I noticed was the size difference. The V3835 is much wider than the previous model I used. It has a much sleeker polished look to it (finger print magnet). This unit looks more contemporary and sophisticated sitting on my kitchen counter. This model is TOTALLY different then previous manual models. When something makes such a drastic change from what you were use to do before, change can be a tricky thing. When I first tried the V3835 I was not sure I was going to like it since it was so different from what I was used to, but now I plan on putting my older version in a garage sale.
I mostly vacuum seal meats and fish. When you have a family of six and spend hundreds a week on groceries, one thing you don't want is to have meats get freezer burn and go to waste. I tend to keep a stocked freezer so all the meat I purchased I reseal in Foodsaver bags. Just like my previous model, you need to cut the bag to your desired size, seal the end and place the food in the bag. I like to pre-season my meats so when they defrost it is ready to cook as is. You have to insert the open end back into the Foodsaver and then it does all the work for you. I can honestly say that about 5 minutes into trying to work the Foodsaver V3835 I was ready to throw it out the window and take out my "old faithful" back out. But after some patience and learning how to probably read the display I got to sealing in no time. It takes some patience and practice, but once you got the hang of how to place the bag into the sealing sensor you will have no problems. However, just remember one important thing - red light on STOP/SEAL button means sealing, no light on the STOP/SEAL button means next step will be vacuuming and sealing.
I LOVE the retractable hose since I use my 4-quart marinating canister often for quick seasoning of fresh meats. On the older model the hose was just clipped onto the back of the unit and it was always falling out and being a nuisance.
On the previous model it wasted about one inch of a bag on each end, with this unit I see about one and half inches. Not a really big difference if you ask me. I tend to purchase rolls by the bulk, it is more cost efficient that way. Amazon tends to offer them at a reasonable price, but you can get specials on them directly from the manufacturer's website (Jarden Consumer Solutions/FoodSaver). Make sure you register your unit and they will send you online coupons and discount codes via email on a regular basis.
