Anyone Interested In Getting A Dog, Should Adopt a Mutt
Dec 18, 2008
As President-elect Barack Obama prepares to take office in a little over a month, not only will he be faced with the responsibilty of leading our country, but fulfilling a promise to his girls.
During his campaign, Obama told the American public that if he won the White House, he'd get his girls, Sasha and Malia a puppy. Well now that he's about to claim the Pennsylvania address as his own for the next four years, he'll have to make good on that promise.
People from all across the country have inundated the Obama family with their pick for the next first puppy. Suggestions for every breed, color and age have flooded in. Now I know Mr President-elect has said his daughters have allergies (I'm pretty sure Malia) which limits then on the breed they can get. But I would urge them to look seriously at a dog from some sort of rescue organization.
I adopted my big bundle of joy from the Humane Society of Missouri a little over a year ago. His name is Spencer and I couldn't imagine life without him. Yeah sure he eats things he shouldn't (like the turkey off my turkey sandwiches) and chews up things that he shouldn't (my favorite pair of black boots). But all those things are replaceable. His unconditional love though isn't.
I have to admit that when I got him I had no clue what do. I checked out 4 books within the first month of bringing him home looking for advice on what to do with my 45 pound bundle of joy. I soon picked up helpful advice not only from my reading, but from other helpful dog people willng to share their insight.
Spencer just turned two and I'd be lying to say he's perfect. I mean I think he is but I know he isn't the best behaved but every day is a learning experience. His background as a shelter dog has made certain obstacles and behaviors harder to overcome, but not impossible. If anything, having him has taught me that with patience and perseverance anything can be accomplshed. I only hope the Obama girls learn and experience the same joy and life lessons I have from a four-legged furry friend for life.
