Wine tasting minus the snobbery

I recently hit the Ugo wine bar for a friend's birthday, and loved the wine selection and laid back atmosphere.

We had a group of five, which is probably the most you'd be able to keep track of in there; it gets a little loud and crowded. There is a bar and a few tables to sit and talk at, but the fun part of Ugo is walking around and trying all the different wines.

The wine bar seems to be a good place to hang out with friends or co-workers, but may be too loud for a romantic date. The Ugo restaurant next door is a better alternative for an intimate dinner, and you can grab some gelato for dessert at the other Ugo next door. (I'm not gonna lie, I can't keep the Ugos straight, and I don't know why there's a few in a row there.)

You're on your own at the wine bar, which I think is a good thing. You just purchase a card with a set amount of money, then go pick your own array from the automated wine dispensers around the room.

The wine tastes range from $1 to $12, in the usual small serving. It's a fun challenge to see if you can spend your whole card perfectly (we had $.17 left). If you like one selection you can go back for more or buy a whole bottle; if not, dump it in the reject bucket.

My boyfriend and I shared a card with $30 and it was a pretty perfect amount -- we were satisfied, but could still drive home safely :)  I would definitely recommend checking out Ugo with friends or a date!

Here is Ugo's location in Culver City, CA, and more info is at their Web site.

I've only ever gone to wine tastings where there's someone to pour wine for me and give me a little background on the wine.  I've never heard of prepaid cards and automatic wine dispensers before, but Ugo's wine bar sounds fun and I'd love to try it some day! :)

I know what you mean about having several businesses with the same name in really close proximity; people often get Chez Panisse's restuarant and cafe confused with each other!

I've gotten into wine recently. Wish we had one in Atlanta. Only thing I realized is you have to watch how much and how you drink it because you can get a buzz pretty fast

Any thoughts on how it compares to Bottle Rock up the steet?
