A first listen, Ryan Leslie's first album suggests that this man has a decent voice and great talent.  Although Ryan isn't as big as say, Usher, Chris Brown or Musiq Soulchild, even - his 12 track record totally caught me off guard when I decided to give it a listen a few weeks ago. There is a track on the album titled Gibberish - which gave me something that I've never heard before.  In fact, Gibberish is an interesting track that has no actual lyrics, but the sounds of Ryan singing to a nicely composed beat and score.  While at first, I figured I was giving the album some passive attention at that point - I realized after starting the song over, that Ryan Leslie is actually speaking gibberish!  I never understood why an artist would throw away a precious spot on his debut album for a song that didn't even make sense.  But after catching this video on Youtube, I figured there were 2 respectable reasons that Ryan Leslie placed the track Gibberish on the album.

Why Gibberish?

1.) Talent. I learned this morning of Ryan Leslie's talent at producing tracks and records  In the video, you can see clips of Ryan putting down the various layers of keys, horns (?), drums and his own voice to create a beautiful mix of slow and sensible music that is pleasant to the ear.  I enjoyed watching this video since I was now able to put a face and personality to the voice I hear in the tracks after watching Ryan put it down on this one.

2.) No words needed. Like I said earlier, I did not notice that there were no lyrics in this song at first listen.  I figured I wasn't listening carefuly to the words, until realizing Ryan intently spoke no sense in the tune that he was speaking.  Despite a lack of actual words and meaning - you still feel a vibe in this song that almost fills you in on what Ryan is actually feeling and conveying in his song.  Shows and confirms to me that music is definitely its own language.

In truth, the description of the video explains that the song Gibberish is a track in which Ryan used to show how singers initially sing illogical strings of sentences simply to find rhythyms, paces and melodies during the song writing process.  The track Gibberish may have had actual words planned for its lyrics, but after the first run at finding its melody, Ryan called it a day, and used it as an actual track on his album.

Very creative! Check it out and let me know what you think.
