Welcome to the first edition of WWE Breaking Point. Breaking Point replaced WWE's original ppv Unforgiven last year. I guess the logic of Breaking Point was for feuding superstars to push each other to the limit. This must have been the case, since three of the heavily hyped matches were submission, with one being an "I Quit" match, which is still technically a submission match. But it's far more humiliating, and at times it can be far more brutal. A perfect example of an "I Quit" Match would be Tully Blanchard vs. Magnum TA of Starrcade 85. That match was just sick.

Now, as disappointing WWE had become by this point. My interest level was somewhat high enough to give this event a chance. But I was still skeptical coming in, because a ppv which is supported by a submission stipulation is definitely a tricky route to go. There must be reasons to fully justify superstars trying to out wrestle the other into submission, or beat each other until one says "I Quit". Minus Randy Orton and John Cena's feud, I really didn't see the point behind a submission stipulation concerning the other two feuds. For a great example of a feud where a submission stipulation was justified, try to see any match between the late Chris Benoit vs. Kurt Angle between the years 2000 and 2003.

1-Unified Tag Team Championship Match
Chris Jericho & The Big Show(C) vs. Mark Henry & MVP

This was a good opener and the ending didn't really seem predictable, because both MVP and Jericho scored pinfall victories on each other. I liked how the match flowed, with each superstar playing very well to their strengths. The match up between Henry and Big Show wasn't bad at all, and the offense from both came off well timed and believable. Jericho heavily bumped and sold for Henry, and carried him to a better performance. Overall, the match was solid, and I remember that Jericho and Show began to grow on me by this time. 3.25/5

2-US Championship Match
Kofi Kingston(C) Vs. The Miz

After practically being buried by Cena on ppv. The Miz needed this match very bad, and despite me not being a fan of his. It was good watching him rebound into a big name today. In any case, this was a decent match that got better during the closing minutes. Miz did pretty well here, but Kingston was far better displaying his quick and cat like moves list, that literally came out of nowhere. These two would continue to feud over this belt. 3.25/5

3-Submissions Count Anywhere Match
DX(Triple H & Shawn Michaels) vs. Legacy(Cody Rhodes & Ted Dibiase)

This is the first of the three submission matches. The match can only end in submission, and the submissions can take place anywhere in the building or even outside in the street.

This was the best feud running at this point. I was expecting great things from them after their Summerslam encounter. Although the match itself was great. I felt the stipulation was kind of a strange pick.

This was also the second hottest feud coming in, but it felt like the hottest because it was heavily built up. The way this feud turned out, the submission rule just didn't seem to fit. The first ten minutes of this bout proved that a Streetfight or even an "I Quit" stipulation would have been far more fitting, because these teams fought a lot more than they actually wrestled. The fight went through the crowd and even into the back stage. Sometimes these matches tend to drag, but there was never a dull moment. These guys got creative and pulled out a weapon supported submission I don't recall ever seeing before.

The stipulation was a serious mixed bag. Outside of Triple H and Michaels occasionally pulling out the crossface and sharpshooter moves(take note, those aren't their booked finishers, and they haven't won with them either). None of these guys had a booked submission as a finisher. So when the hot hold was slapped on, the fans didn't mark out for it. But then again, this heavily played into the suspense. Since it's very difficult to get a submission out of both Michaels and Triple H anyway. I guess it all comes down to what you're looking for. Either the suspense, or that finishing move "pop" adding to the build up. In this case concerning who the competitors are, I prefer the suspense.

Overall, despite the strange booking and the fact this match was put on way too early. It was still match of the night for me, due to the best action and storytelling leading up to the end. These two teams would go on to feud, and this match did a great job pushing the rivalry, as well as once again elevating Legacy into a two man threat. 4.5/5

4-Singapore Cane Match
Kane vs. The Great Khali

This is a hardcore match taking place with Singapore canes in the four corners of the ring.

Why WWE insisted on pushing this feud was something I never understood. This rivalry was awful. Undertaker and Triple H barely got a good match out of Khali, and Kane is only as good as his opposition. So it was a no brainer that this match would have been as bad as the others. This match was boring all around, with some very poor offense. This was actually worst than their Summerslam encounter. I didn't get into this one at all. 0/5

5-ECW Championship Match
Christian(C) vs. William Regal

Now, THIS was a wrestling clinic. Now, THIS was a Summerslam type of match. And THIS was the match we should have gotten at Summerslam. I enjoy this bout more every time I see it. These two worked one hell of a "wrestling" match, by delivering a very good amount of mat based chain wrestling, that didn't rely on many high spots. There were some fantastic counters, and painful looking offense. This match clearly displayed technical finesse, which happens to be a lost art these days. The crowd wasn't very into it. But those who enjoy the old school style of wrestling consisting of real grapples, counters, and submissions, will more than likely appreciate it. 4/5

6-"I Quit" Match for the WWE Championship
Randy Orton(C) vs. John Cena

The second of the three submission matches. The rules of this match is for a superstar to beat his opponent until he says in the microphone, "I Quit".

Personally, I still prefer their two Summerslam clashes over this. But, I must admit that I wasn't looking forward to this one. I never thought for one second that Cena would say those words.

The match started off very weak, with Cena having to squeeze in his crowd pleasers. Later on, the match got better, and became more character driven. This bout mainly pushed Orton as the sadistic killer who will do anything to win, and Cena's never say die attitude. Orton tortured Cena with handcuffs and cane shots to his midsection so bad, you could see the black and blues. We all know this is booked, but Cena deserves credit for taking those clean hits.

The ending itself for me dragged the ending down a whole lot. It was way too sudden, and I think only one person came out of this looking like a million bucks. Oh well, at least the kids pretty much went home happy. 4/5

7-Submission Match for the World Heavyweight Championship
CM Punk(C) vs. Undertaker

This match can only end by submission.

The final submission match of the event, and they couldn't end this event on a more terrible note. Out of the three submission matches, this was the only one where it made no sense at all. Creative did their best to build up this match, by having Punk go back to using the Anaconda Vice submission on opponents weeks prior to this. The intention was for him to counter the Hell's Gate submission used by Undertaker. To include, they also changed history by claiming Undertaker has never tapped out(not their first time either). But I kept wondering why were these two in a submission match to begin with.

The match had some decent action, with Punk sticking to his speed and cleverness to outmanuever Taker, until he was eventually overpowered and almost destroyed. The ending really came out of nowhere. However, the match was re-started and it resulted in the Montreal Screwjob taking place once again, but this time in 2009. Even though the outcome made sense as far as developing the storyline was concerned. I still think this match was poorly planned. WWE triedto dig in the crates to come up with something special. Instead, they dug themselves a deep hole with no escape. At the end of the day, this was meant to save Taker's character. They could have gotten the exact same result on free TV, and it wouldn't have looked as bad. 2.5/5

Coming into this event, I was curious to see how an all main event submission ppv would have worked out. I give WWE credit for being innovative. But this is the type of event that should be planned out a lot better, with story lines that support the stipulations. Submission matches should only be used in long running feuds, where the feuding superstars have went through just about everything else. At least this is the way I see it. Overall, this is a decent event that is only worth a rental at best.

Pros:
-Most matches are watchable

Cons:
-Strange booking and rehashing of old and historical event
