There are some awesome bouts in UFC 72. All five of the main card fights were decent and action packed. UFC 72 takes place in Belfast, Northern Ireland and the crowd is intense. It seems the Irish still love a good scrap. I always like to watch Rich “the Ace” Franklin fight, as well as Forrest Griffin. They both have winning fights in UFC 72.
~~~~ Rich “ACE” Franklin VS. Yushin "The Wolf" Okami ~~~
First off I am a huge Rich Franklin fan. Rich Franklin, Forrest Griffin and Matt Hughes are my favorite fighters. I also enjoy watching Randy “The Natural” Couture, Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell and Rashad Evans scrap. Anyway for those who don’t know Rich Franklin was the former UFC middle weight champion. He held the belt for quite some time before losing to Anderson Silvia. Franklin was a school teacher before becoming a MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fighter. The fight started off with both Franklin and Okami looking focused. I was surprised how big of a man Okami is. He made Franklin look small and Franklin is a good size dude. After a couple of minutes it became obvious that Franklin was setting the pace and pushing the action. Okami was trying to counter Franklin without much success (maybe because they are both south paws). Franklin also landed some solid leg kicks. Nonetheless the round was slow. Round two was a little better. Both fighters land some good punches and Franklin lands a few more leg kicks that start taking their toll. It looks like Franklin wins this round as well but again it‘s another slow round. This puts Okami in a bad place, either knock Franklin out or lose. Round three starts out with Franklin extending his arm to touch gloves and Okami goes for a flying knee. That pissed me off, so I was hoping Franklin would knock him out. Instead they clinch and go to the ground. Okami is on top and Franklin is in guard. Somehow while scrambling Okami gets Franklin in a Kimura and it looks deep and very bad for Franklin! Rich finally gets out of it just before the end of the round. Round three was the best round of the fight.
~~~~ Forrest Griffin VS. Hector Ramirez ~~~
Forrest Griffin is another good guy. Prior to his UFC career he worked as a law enforcement officer in Georgia. This guy is fun to watch before, during and after the fight. He would fight anyone, anytime anyplace. He’s also funny. He said if Hector didn’t like the way he fought to win the fight than he’d fight him in the parking lot if he wanted. You have to laugh… Anyway Forrest fought a lot different than he usually does. He knew Hector Ramirez had some heavy hands and if he stood toe to toe with him he could very well get knocked out. After his loss to Keith Jardine Forrest changed his thinking on fighting guys with heavy hands. Forrest worked some great and effective combinations in the fight. Then he would move away. By round two Ramirez is clearly getting frustrated and he starts throwing haymakers. Forrest had also continually been landing hard kicks to the legs of Ramirez. By round three Ramirez is gassed, frustrated and hurting. Forrest stayed away from the bombs that Ramirez was throwing and played his own game.

The rest of the fights were pretty decent. McDonald and Rory Singer was a good fight. The first round was action packed. The fight is stopped in the second round by the referee due to strikes by McDonald. The Tyson Griffin vs. Clay Guida was the best fight of the night. Both fighters are very technical and both at the top of their game! This was three rounds of nonstop action. They fought standing up, in the clinch and on the ground. They both gave it their all for all fifteen minutes and it goes to a decision. I’m glad I didn’t have to call that fight. It truly could have went to either fighter. Tyson Griffin won by a split decision. I also enjoyed the Ed “Short Fuse” Herman Vs. Scott Smith fight. Both of these guys are good fighters. Herman has a little too much attitude for my liking but he’s a top fighter nonetheless. His fight with the equally skilled Scott Smith was fast and brutal! This is one of the rare UFC’s where 90% of the fights are good ones. UFC 72 is definitely worth renting for the casual fight fans out there. For us diehard fight fans, it’s a must own DVD.
