I saw this over the weekend in Manhattan and found it to be filled with alot of "raw" energy, with excellent music and great dancing. The actors were first rate though the Spanish accents were a little bit exaggerated. The story is quite simple. A young lady from the"Barrio" (Washington Heights) has quit college in California because she can no longer afford the tuition. This upsets her parents, especially her father who owns a radio cab company. Her father is further infuriated when she begins to fall in love with one of her father's non-hispanic employees.
The story also focuses on the goings on at the local beauty shop and bodega as well as the bodega owner's sick mother (referred to as La Reina). The focus of the show is the singing and dancing more so than the plot. The set looks like a very good reproduction of a geniune New York City block. Other than the very simple plot my one complaint is that there is only the single set used throughout the play. However, the high energy of the actors makes up for a lot of the shortcomings.
