What made this show work when it was aired was not only the interaction between the cast but also whatever historical timeperiod they visited you wanted to go out and research that time frame. The first episode was probably the best because you get to see the long spiral of the tunnel from the side (I don't think that was ever shown again) making it look like a huge expense for a set at its time.
