Lover Revealed!

The fourth novel in the Black Dagger Brotherhood Series, Lover Revealed, focuses on the one person in the group who isn't a vampire--Butch O'Neal, the former cop who is a close, respected friend to the Brotherhood, yet still an outsider. Butch wants to fight lessers like the Brothers, yet he is frustrated that his human-ness leaves him vulnerable in the attacks. The love of his life, Marissa, is off-limits to a non-vampire as well, so basically, life just sucks for Butch, even with the fancy clothes and the good friends.

This story gives us some background on Butch and his outsider status, something he's suffered under most of his life. Butch has great instincts, but when he is captured by the Fore-lesser and tortured, his entire existence changes. In fact, most of this book is about life changes, and not just Butch's; Marissa must come to terms with her independence and her own outsider issues. Though the two suffer many misunderstandings, each learns what he/she is capable of, with Butch nearly losing his life in the process.

I liked this installment very much; I confess I've always had a soft spot for Butch and I liked how Ward developed his story. If there did seem to be a lot of similarities to the other books in the series, I can't complain because honestly, that's what has kept me interested in them in the first place. I loved the growth of both Butch and Marissa throughout this novel, feeling that both overcame circumstances out of their control. My biggest complaint would lie with the lessers, since their story seemed to show them at their weakest without giving many details as to what was happening with them. While I worry that some of the "current" language will be dated quickly, I don't think it's a big obstacle in the overall enjoyment to the series. Filled with lots of sex, violence, and humor, Lover Revealed is my favorite so far. I know what I'm getting with the Brotherhood, and it's all good.
