This was one of the better reads in my latest batch of young adult fiction, not perfect by any means but a smooth and speedy ride compared to many other books that are out these days. Nothing new here when it comes to the great mystery, the story involved werewolves, who in the past have gotten somehow entwined into young romance stories, I'm used to this ferocious giant who has no enemies and chomps his way through people, who knew they were such little romantics deep down? Grace Divine always knew that something horrible had happened the night that Daniel Kalbi disappeared and her brother Jude came home covered in blood--his own. The problem is that she doesn't know what, and now that Daniel's back, years later, she doesn't know how to act or who to listen to. Jude makes her promise to stay away from Daniel because he's convinced Daniel is some kind of monster. Grace can't bring herself to believe that, though. How could her childhood crush be monstrous? The cover of this novel was very compelling and had me drooling even before I read the synopsis. After reading the back and review tid-bits, the cover was still the main draw and I was a bit leery because of the usual YA hype that surrounded it. (Don't like to be disappointed) So, I painted my toenails, with my Dark Divine nail polish and put on the Soundtrack and settled in to read this book - and was totally surprised. Bree Despain's debut novel is stunning and mysterious. The novel starts off quickly with some intrigue, as Daniel Kalbi comes back into town. I've never quite read a novel that hooked me by the third page, but The Dark Divine did just that. Despain's writing has an addictive quality to it, and she seemed to effortlessly pull everything together in just the right way, with just enough mystery to keep you guessing.
