In 1974 Carrie was published and Stephen King hit the scene.  The book in and of itself didn't really become a bestseller until it arrived in paperback.  Afterwards, King followed Carrie up with Salem's Lot, a more mature and fleshed out story than King's freshman novel.  The Shining is what made King a household name and solidified him as a force to be reckoned with in horror fiction.  This book is most certainly not the most important book out there in horror fiction, but it …

The first Stephen King book that I ever read, and in many ways his finest. Tightly written, thoroughly character-driven, and just plain frightening from cover to cover. From this are great reputations made!

Rarely have five hundred small-fonted pages of a novel passed so fast.    Before reading The Shining, I quite wrongly perceived Stephen King as as a pot-boiler par excellence - a turner-out of yearly novels for long enough that bookshop comfortably carry a whole shelves dedicated to his stuff, all spine-emblazoned with his name much larger than the book's title in ghoulish green or red; the time-honoured costume of the poolside horror. I once saw Salem's Lot as the only novel …

Pros: good character development, descriptive     Cons: none for me     The Bottom Line:   King is one of the few people that understand that the evil that lurks in man is the scariest of all.     If you have never read The Shining, especially if you are not a Stephen King fan, then I would suggest you give it a chance. It was perhaps his fourth book, not as voluminous as some of his other works, and many say it was his best. …

This is my kind of book ... I love scary books, and this is one of King's best. He and Dean Koontz really know what pushes our fright buttons.    A natural for the movie, and Jack Nicholson was wonderful in that part. What a team: KING AND NICHOLSON. Boo ...    If you've seen the movie but haven't read the book, buy this NOW! And vice-versa.

Over 25 years after it was published, "The Shining" remains ones of King's best novels to date. It is not simply the story of a supernatural hotel, but also the all-too-normal corruption and degradation that can exist within the human heart.Jack Torrance is a deeply-flawed man, both as a husband and a father, and when the evil presence in the Overlook Hotel finds him, it exploits his every weakness. "The Shining" is a gripping book, and it is one of the few books of King's that I would say is truly …

Stephen King's THE SHINING is a classic piece of modern day literature. The story is enthralling and unlike other early King stories, has several layers. Is the book solely about a hotel possessed by evil spirits? Or are all the horrifying images merely physical manifestations of what happens to Jack Torrance as he suffers through a total mental and psychotic breakdown? The answer is both. The book is thrilling and suspenseful and full of unforgettable images. Of course, it's not for everyone, but …
