The second book in the "Twilight Saga" by Stephenie Meyer.
< read all 95 reviews I enjoyed the Twilight series as a compelling and quick read, but this book dragged on and spent too much time on Bella and Jacob. Jacob lovers probably loved the book for that reason, but if you prefer Edward to Jacob or if you prefer reading about a Bella who isn't angsty, you will be sadly disappointed in this novel. It does build Bella and Jacob's character slightly, but as the whole series is focused on the love between Edward and Bella, this book does not fit.
With that said, I would recommend this book to die hard Twilight fans because it does further the plot and help explain the third book, Eclipse. However, if you aren't a die hard Twilight fan but just enjoy the series, I would recommend skipping this one and instead reading my condensed plot below:
Bella gets injured again at the vampires' house; Jasper makes a slight movement towards her and Edward freaks out. Edward decides that despite their love that "goes beyond soul mates," he needs to leave Bella forever for her safety. Ironically, Bella immediately gets lost in the woods and spends the next several months in an angsty stupor. She befriends Jacob, who somewhat helps her come back to reality, but she also discovers that near-death experiences make her see Edward's face in her mind. Fast-forward. Jacob is a werewolf and Victoria, the mate of Bella's would-be murderer is back with revenge on her mind in the form of killing Edward's mate, Bella. Bella jumps off a cliff and Victoria almost gets her, but Jacob saves her in time. The Cullens mistakenly believe Bella is dead and Edward decides to kill himself. Bella and Alice travel to Italy to save him and he decides to never leave Bella again. Oh yeah, and the council of vampires want Bella turned into a vampire soon or they'll kill her.
