Instant gratification!

  • Jan 18, 2011
It is a treat that Americans have been enjoying since they were first introduced at the Chicago World's Fair way back in 1893. Evidently those who tasted the first brownies found them to be an irresistible treat. Word spread and a few years later in 1897 the first known recipe for brownies was published in of all places the Sears Roebuck catalogue. What people liked so much about brownies was that you could pick them up and eat them just about anywhere. They are the ultimate comfort food and can be enjoyed at picnics, parties, church suppers or in your own living room. Furthermore, people quickly realized that they could tinker with the basic recipe and create their own delicious concoctions. Yes, it seems that the humble brownie has come a long way in the past century.

Now just for fun I went online and did a quick inventory of the variety of brownie mixes that are available at your local supermarket. America's favorite brand of brownie mix is Betty Crocker and I discovered that they are now offered in at least 8 or 9 varieties including Original, Chocolate Fudge, Original Supreme, Chocolate Chunk, Frosted and Peanut Butter to mention but a few. I learned that the folks at Betty Crocker also offer Gluten Free and Low Fat varieties as well. If all of these flavors were not enough I also found a whole host of other packaged brownie mixes including Peanut Butter Cup, Double Chocolate, Triple Chocolate Decadence, Walnut, Caramel Turtle and Cream Cheese. I half expected to find a Seaweed Swirl brownie mix for the health conscious among us. Meanwhile, freshly baked brownies are a staple item at most neighborhood bakeries and supermarkets while packaged brownies full of all kinds of preservatives can be had at your neighborhood convenience store or in the vending machine at the place where you work. And I would be remiss if I failed to mention one of my personal favorites. The Brownie Sundae is a very popular item at your local ice cream emporium. Oh so good and positively decadent! And were you aware that December 8th is National Brownie Day? I kid you not!

I must confess that I enjoy all manner of brownies from the lowly convenience store variety to the ones you bake at home and onto the gourmet varieties you find at the best restaurants. I find that it is increasingly difficult to resist the urge because all of my favorite snack foods are so readily available. It is small wonder that the rate of heart disease and diabetes is so high in this country. All I can do is urge moderation.  But whenever you are in need of a chocolate fix grabbing a brownie is definitely the way to go.  Highly recommended!
