If you get the chance to visit one of Ciao Bella's "Gelato Bars," (there are 4 in NYC and 3 in the San Francisco Bay Area) you will find an assortment of about 15 sorbet flavors in addition to about 15 gelato flavors. The gelato is delicious but the reason I am writing this review is to highlight the non-dairy sorbet.
Usually when I take my daughters (who eat gluten-free and dairy-free) out for ice cream, there is only one non-dairy flavor. While other kids are getting to taste 5 different flavors with those cute little spoons, my girls are usually stuck with lemon.
Walking into Ciao Bella for sorbet is like walking into non-dairy ice cream heaven! So many flavors to choose from. So many beautiful, bright colors! There is even chocolate! And cute little spoons! And even if my daughter ends up getting strawberry every time, at least she gets to make that choice.
The unique flavors, like Blackberry Cabernet and Sicilian Blood Orange are rich and complex. Coconut sorbet is so creamy and delicious that I had to fend my 5-year old off before she ate all mine. I love to get a combination of flavors that complement each other. Sorbet flavors offered are: * Banana Mango * Blackberry Cabernet * Blood Orange (Sicilian) * Blueberry * Chocolate * Coconut (Dominican) * Grapefruit Campari * Green Apple * Lemon (Sicilian) * Mango (Alphonso) * Passion Fruit (Ecuadorian) * Peach (Northwest) * Pear (Bartlett) * Pineapple (Philippine) * Pomegranate (Californian) * Raspberry (Northwest) * Strawberry (Northwest) And seasonal flavors: Prickly Pear and Rose Petal Champagne
Don't live in NYC or SF? Don't despair! Ciao Bella's gelatos and sorbets can be found by the pint in many grocery stores, including Whole Foods. Just look for the snowflake design for the sorbet (the gelato has a swirl).
