It's been announced by Erick Tseng of Google that the next generation of Androids will be known as Froyo which is the short for frozen yogurt! Coincidentally, this week I came across my first TCBY store (The Country's Best Yogurt from the U.S.) in Shenzhen, China. Yes, I tried the Blueberry Cheese flavor. Exotic, isn't it?
I love soft frozen yogurt. My very first was Yami Yogurt from Hawaii. TCBY is the next best thing but I do believe it has now superseded Yami Yogurt. That's the verdict after my recent tasting of Yami Yogurt in Singapore & TCBY in China.
What I like about these froyo is that it is not as creamy as ice cream but a shade in between ice cream and sherbert. Froyo is not as sweet too plus in my mind, it's less fattening! May be that's simply a trick of the mind, may be not. I do know I love froyo more than ice cream and that I love them in the sugar cone. I also love frozen yogurt banana boat. Fruits and nuts mix well with frozen yogurt for some reasons.
For those who likes ice cream, TCBY also serves their own variety of ice cream. I haven't tried them but I will next time I'm there.
Interesting enough, frozen yogurt had its origin in Asia. Although it is a relative new comer in the dessert market, it dates back to thousand of years to Asia where water ices were first made. Marco Polo later introduced these water ices to Europe & within a few centuries ice cream was invented & then introduced to the U.S..
Frozen yogurt first appeared in the 70s but was not well received until the 80s when calories counting became a norm. These low calories froyo became popular and commanded a market as huge as $25 millions in mid 80s with triple digit growth rates! By the early 90s, the market for yogurt grew to $330 m sales and commanded a 10% share in the dessert market!
So, what is it in these froyo that makes it different from ice cream? 1% of its ingredients are yogurt culture (strains of bacteria: Lactobacillus bulgaricus & Streptococcus). Otherwise, everything is the same.
2 important elements in yogurt making are water & air. Air is added into the mixture to add volume.
Froyo is never completely frozen. It contains ice crystals instead.
Milk solid, not fat (MSNF) makes up about 8 to 15% of froyo. Sugar - 15 %.
It is a lot healthier to eat froyo than ice cream & that's fine as I'm concerned as I don't really have that a sweet tooth. I found a lot of ice cream to be much too sweet and too filling to eat anything thereafter so this is as great a dessert as any as far as I'm concerned.
While ice cream is great with bread (as a meal), frozen yogurt is great to eat with fruits and nuts as toppings. If I'm not too hungry for a full meal, I'll simply add lots of fruits to it and that's a meal for me. Yogurt is great with banana as well as watermelon and pineapple or kiwi. If you like, you can buy a tub of it and leave it in your fridge so that you may make your own meal during the weekends. Best in the summer, of course :-)
