Generally expensive, but a bargain for lunch

The purpose of this review is to address the most common criticism of Whole Foods: that it is way too expensive. I agree that for everyday shopping, the prices are considerably higher than traditional supermarkets. It is difficult to compare prices for non-organic vs organic or hormone free/free range/sustainably raised vs not, but still, I concede the point.

Great bargains are to be found, however, if you are heading to Whole Foods for lunch and not to buy groceries. I eat a lot of their teriyaki chicken bowls w rice and veggies ($6.60) udon soups ($5.50 to $8 depending on add-ins) and other soups from the soup bar ($4-$7). The one near me in El Segundo has a tremendous salad bar and self serve prepared foods bar. I can fill up a container with a satisfying lunch for under ($5.00.)

It is true that these lunches are still more expensive than some fast food offerings, however the meals above are all delicious and healthy featuring lots of fresh vegetables. I defy anyone to find a more convenient and affordable option for a quick healthy lunch (or dinner).

What are you eating for $ 5 ? I love ( completely addicted) to the curry tofu, snow pea salad and whole grain salads but I never walk out without it costing at least 10 bucks last time it was 15!! ... Maybe it is Connecticut .. Everything seems to cost more here But Damn it is good.. I would love to find the recipe for that indian tofu. Soo Good.

I agree with you in that the lunches in the prepared foods area can be very affordable, and are quite comparable to fast food lunches. What does the average fast food lunch run these days, maybe $6 - $8 for many people? I also think they have very good prices on staples like turbinado raw sugar. They have good prices on wine too, and a discount if you buy six bottles. Their superior breads are comparably priced to other premium loaves and many are baked in house. Love that seeduction bread.

Thanks for the comment! Yeah...for the quality of the food, you are getting a good deal. I haven't tried their superior breads, but will check them out.

I love the food they sell here and I'm very fond of the idea. What a shame the prices will break the bank. Also, would it kill Mackey to make Whole Foods more established in the national eye? I just moved to Buffalo, and the closest Whole Foods is in Toronto - a 90-minute drive which only people who have passports can make! The most accessable without a passport is a four-hour drive, in freaking Pittsburgh! Big waste of energy to make trips like that!

Though Trader Joe's is my grocery store of choice for afford-ability, on a recent stop at Whole Foods I couldn't help but notice two things. First, it isn't as expensive as I previously thought. Most staple organic items that aren't processed or micro-packaged are priced about the same as even a regular grocery store. This may be due to the fact that conventional foods are not immune to inflation lately and organic food are leveling out and became more mainstream. Second, I loved their "I'm local" …

Quality goods, but we still call it "Whole Paycheck." The selection of natural and organics is hard to beat, but certain health claims are more than just a little over-rated.

I like Whole Foods. I know it is easy to hate them for their prices and gigantic presences. I can't afford to shop there often but I know that Whole Foods moving into our part of the country made the local chains pay attention. For the first time they offer organic options and nature products. They even developed a "generic organic brand" in order  to compete. So on balance they have made the choices better for the community. Some of the poorer parts of town now …

These markets usually only stock in-season fruits and vegetables- which goes a long way in supporting local farmers in our own communities. Most of the foods … more

Alright, this is more of an experiment than anything else.      That being said, here is my take on Whole Foods.  Awesome selection, great service.  Downside is that it is atrociously expensive and at the same time the store is flawed by its clientele, who are generally people who suffer greatly from an overly inflated sense of self entitlement.

I love the hot and cold food bars!

Love Whole Foods. Great selection of produce, cereals, frozen foods, meat and cheese! A bit more expensive, but worth it.
