Dr. Bernstein treated my father at Community Memorial Hospital (CMH) in Ventura California in November 2007. My dad came into the hospital with bad COPD and was dying of emphysema... he'd been a smoker his whole life. He had been in the hospital before and we had dealt with other pulmonologists at other hospitals as well as at Community Memorial Hospital and Dr Berstein should be recognized for his superior care and sensitivity when helping us through such a difficult period in our lives. I would recommend anyone who is admitted at CMH to insist on Dr Bernstein over the other options at CMH.
It always stuck me as so strange that when doctors are in this field when the regularly have to help people cope with irreversible problem, that they don't act with some more respect for the family. For example, it was a common response of nurses and doctors to always ask about how much my dad smoked... when we'd tell them he smoked most of his life, they would imply that he did this to himself. All i would think was... sure, i know that, but i don't need every single nurse that comes into treat him to get their high horse and remind me of that fact. What i need is someone to help my family and my dad understand what options he has at that current time. As time passes the options become fewer and fewer and it doesn't help anyone to be pointing the finger at the person lying in the bed saying "you did this to yourself". Dr. Bernstein never once passed judgment and was always forthcoming with any information he had. He wasn't trying to be compassionate... he just was. Additionally, he was so attentive. He had many responsibilities (including managing the ICU) and many patients to deal with, but never once made us feel less important than his other obligations.
Bottom line is that i couldn't imagine having anyone else stand at my side while dealing with something as difficult as losing a parent. My dad died November 20th, 2007 after being in the hospital for a month. Dr Bernstein was great... i couldn't have asked for more from the guy.
If you are a patient, you and your family would be very lucky to have him as your doctor. If you are a doctor, you would be lucky to work with him and learn from him because is what is good about medicine. This guy is solid and i have much respect for him.
