About plantsandbooks
Thanks for viewing my profile! I am a college administrator that currently works in housing a private university. The main purpose of my job (other than providing a safe and comfortable living environment for students) is to capatilize on the benefits of living in community living situations by challenging students to develop into citizens that effectively communicate, appropriately navigate mature relationships, confront conflict, engage in conversations around sensitive subjects, and other important life skills. I've observed through four years of full time work and six years of graduate/undergraduate employment at universities that one thing the age of social networking has failed to continue is effective communication skills among the youth of America.

I love dogs. About six months ago I adopted a lab-unknown mix puppy from a local halfway home animal adoption. Although time consuming, I love training him to be a well behaved and well mannered dog.

I am carnivorous plant enthusiast and a board member of the North America Sarracenia Conservancy, a nonprofit organization committed to perserving the genetic diversity of Sarracenia, a plant that grows mostly up the eastern seaboard of the United States with some species extending up into Canada. The native habitat of Sarracenia is marshy bogs that are currently being developed at an alarming rate; in fact, just 10% of their habitat remains from ten years ago due to development and runoff.

When not working or training my dog I love to read books. I saddens me that reading (for fun) is not a focal point or priority in our American community. Although I will read pretty much anything (except for romance) my favorite genres are by far Fantasy and Science Fiction. I have a goal to read 50,000 pages in a calendar year sometime in my life; but I haven't even come close yet. I think this year I will probably end up around the halfway mark (25,000 pages) this year, which is significantly higher than any previous year.

My dream job is an official baseball scorekeeper for the MLB.

The best books I have ever read include:
  • Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein;
  • The Godfather by Mario Puzo;
  • Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Persig;
  • The Great Hunt by Robert Jordan;
  • Ishmael by Daniel Quinn;
  • Gateway by Frederik Pohl;
  • The Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo
  • Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson; and,
  • Timeline by Michael Crichton.

If you have any recommendations for books to read, send them my way. I will put them on the infinitely long "To Be Read" pile.
