Be My Love, Student Prince!

  • Sep 9, 2009
Well, this student prince is certainly not from my time and even older than my parents' time. I first heard him on an LP (gramaphone records) which many of you here won't even know what the heck that is. My parents love of music meant that I was blessed with lots of beautiful songs from their time and before.

Mario Lanza was one such singer and actor as with Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Cary Grant  & Richard Burton.
Mario Lanza was famous for his spinto tenor voice and his portrayal of the Great Caruso. My memory of him dated back to the Student Prince record with which my parents used to listen to (dozen of times). Lanza's songs are some of the greatest music ever composed and his rendition of them was so inspiring that famous singers and tenors like Elvis Presley, Pavarotti, Placido Domingo & Jose Carreras have all paid tribute to him one way or another.

Jose Carreras paid tribute to this great musician in his 1994 world tour by saying that "If I'm an opera singer, it's thanks to Mario Lanza" while Placido Domingo echoed the same sentiment 15 years later on CBS by saying "Lanza's passion and the way his voice sounds are what made me sing opera. I actually owe my love for opera thanks to a kid from Philadelphia."

And so, for all of us who are lovers of operas, the Student Prince is the source of greatest inspiration who began the journey of the greatest music ever to have graced our musical world. Thank you, Mario Lanza!

About this actor

Mario Lanza (January 31, 1921 – October 7, 1959) was an Italian American tenor and Hollywood movie star who enjoyed success in the late 1940s and 1950s.

His lirico spinto tenor voice was considered by his admirers to rival that of Enrico Caruso, whom Lanza portrayed in the 1951 filmThe Great Caruso. Compared with Caruso, however, his operatic career was negligible. Lanza sang a wide variety of music throughout his career, ranging from operatic arias to the popular songs of the day. While his highly emotional style was not universally praised by critics, he was immensely popular and his many recordings are still prized today. He died of a pulmonary embolism at the age of 38 and was entombed in Holy Cross Cemetery.
