Around 10 am, a bus load of 25 people (22 foreigners from Hong Kong on their last day of a 4-day tour) was hijacked by a former policeman who demanded to have his job back (he was accused of extortion last year). The gunman has since been killed after the 11-hour hold out at around 8.30 pm (HK time).
3 kids and 2 elder with a local was released earlier in the day. A few hostages (around 4 or 5) were seen getting out of the bus as I'm writing this review.
Now, this case seems so unreal... like watching a movie live on TV. There are even reporters from many foreign countries surrounding the bus. Even the policemen were around it for hours.
I began watching it only about an hour before the gunman was killed. He was seen shooting (like a machine gun of sorts) out of the bus. At least 2 are dead although the local TV has not reported how many are dead or injured. For a moment, I got a flashback to Sep. 11 when I was watching on CNN live of the 2 plane attacks. The entire episode (both then and now) seems so unreal! Which makes me think, what is the world coming to?!
Back then, it started a war. Now, a law-enforcer turns terrorist to get his job back?!?! Ridiculous!!! The guy is nut! Or is he? Or is it a case of we cannot trust law-enforcer now?
Philippines is like the Mexico of South East Asia. Even back then, many Chinese are afraid of going to the country as many of them had been kidnapped by the local mafia groups. I had taken many years before I even set foot in the country, and it was only for 2 days to the resort town of Cebu. And as with Mexico, people asked me why I want to visit. Why indeed? After this event, many tourists will be wondering...
So, what did the guy accomplished? Nothing! Absolutely nothing other than showing he's an idiot! I have no respect for such people, regardless of what instigated the bloody mess to begin with. But I've also been told recently by another guy from Rio that it's even worse in Brazil. The story goes that policemen are so corrupted that they teamed up with bankers to rob clients in the bank! A Chinese lady was killed some time ago for having brought $1/4 million cash to the bank to be credited into her a/c! The policemen were called and when they arrived at the bank they then killed the lady and shared the loot with the bankers! Geez, how corrupted can a country be? Well, not until you set foot in one, you'd probably haven't got a good grasp of the situation.
As for the Philippines, I'd consider it my fortune I've had been there before. It'd be a long long time before I consider heading that way again! And, I'm sure the same goes for many people around the region. I've nothing against the Filipinos, but unfortunately, the country is not safe to warrant us to risk our lives for someone's insanity! For the unfortunate few who lost their lives in Manila, I feel so very sorry for them and their family members... It's a freak tragedy and a very incapable Filipino military!
Latest Update: 8 tourists have been reported killed, 1 seriously wounded & 6 are in hospital under observation as a result of this incident. The rest of the tour group will be flown back on Cathay Pacific chartered flight by the Hong Kong government asap. The government has advised all tours from Hong Kong to be canceled and all tourists to return home at the soonest. Travelers have now been advised not to go to Philippines.
A very unfortunate tragedy for the Hong Thai group of tourists from Hong Kong. A few has been killed although it is lucky that some have managed to be released. The gunman is a former policeman demanding his job back. That's the craziest thing a law enforcer could do! To resort to terrorism?!!! Nuts! Tourism will be bad in the Philippines from now on, if not bad enough to begin with! I'm watching it live on Hong Kong TV like it's an action movie. It's like … more
