The Cylon's Plan is Revealed, and We Already Knew Most of It...

While any chance to once more go into the land of Ron Moore's re-imagined Battlestar Galactica is a welcome treat, The Plan was almost a half assed way of going about it.  When it's all said and done, viewers are left feeling a little cheated.  Was it fun to watch?  Sure, but a good 65% percent of the film is previous clips from throughout the series.  The advertising for The Plan made it seem as if it was going to be a brand new addition to the Battlestar world, but that wasn't the case.  While the movie isn't bad and is entertaining to watch, there wasn't a whole lot that people didn't already know that was supposedly revealed in The Plan.  The film does focus on a new story about one of the Galactica's deck hands who was married to one of the Simon models without knowing that he was a cylon, giving fans at least something original to watch.

The Plan focuses on Brother Cavil's (Dean Stockwell) plan to destroy humanity.  Tell me something I don't know.  The film is shown from two sides, the Cavil that is hiding in the fleet and the Cavil who is living among survivors on Caprica along with Sam Anders.  The plan was originally meant to destroy humanity in one fell swoop with no survivors, but with Galactica, Pegasus and the human survivors on Caprica, Cavil is forced to improvise.  Holding secret meetings with other Cylon agents within the fleet and working from the inside of a guerilla warfare/pyramid team on Caprica, the Cavil's try and finish what they started.  The Cylon leader has set backs though as his other cylon agents can't seem to get the job done, with even some falling in love and not wanting to work for the cylons at all.

Obviously, the parts of The Plan that were good stemmed from the new footage that Edward James Olmos directed. The storyline involving the deckhand Giana O'Neill was very well done, portraying how she, like many others fell for a cylon and lived to tell the tale.  There were some great interactions between her and Tyrol (Aaron Douglas) and there really should have been a few more.  Her story also tells part of a the story from the beginning of the series, people having to come work aboard Galactica due to the crew being short staffed after the holocaust.  The best story by far was Sam Anders and his survival on Caprica.  While it's evident that Cavil was protecting him, you get to see Sam become this leader and help bring up his teams survival rate.  This is some backstory that fans had wanted for a while and were able to get that through The Plan.  Unfortunately most of the rest of the film is all rehashed from prior seasons.

There were definitely some advantages of having The Plan released straight to Blu-ray.  While it is clearly stated that the folks behind BSG wanted to keep the gritty style of the show, it still looked very good, except for maybe a few clips from the miniseries that weren't remastered.  The additional content that was filmed looked and sounded crystal clear.  Another benefit of doing a straight to DVD/Blu-ray film is lack of a rating.  These things never get rated, leaving writer Jane Espenson and director Edward James Olmos with some leeway and a chance to show some things the series wanted to air on TV but couldn't.  For anyone who watched Battlestar Galactica, then you know it was a very sexual show and The Plan takes complete advantage of that with full nudity and a pretty steamy sex scene.

Overall, they should have taken the time to create a completely original film instead of basically putting a clip show on a Blu-ray disc.  Sure, it was enjoyable to watch, but again, it was something everyone had seen before and knew for the most part.  While the film gives you a more in depth look into the destruction of the colonies and some new stories, The Plan had the potential to be so much more.  As a collector, there's no problem owning it, especially if you are a die hard fan of the series, but for everyone else, this a rental or even maybe *cough* a download *cough*.  Battlestar Galactica: The Plan is available in stores and Amazon.com as a DVD and Blu-ray and on iTunes as a digital download.  It will air on Syfy in 2010.  2/5.

Nicely done. I enjoyed BSG during its entire run on SyFy (or Sci-Fi, back in the day). I was considering this one but we already know what happened so why bother? Might be better for me to get the all the season DVDs. Waiting for Caprica, looks like a hot series.

I was a big fan of the original series and grew to love the updated version...until the ending. I'm amazed that I never saw any advertising or mention of this movie. I'm assuming it was a SyFy movie, right?

It was a straight to DVD/Blu-ray and will air on Syfy in 2010 I believe...

Sorry you didn't like the ending of BSG, DD. I too was a fan of the original when I was a wee tot, but did like the whole "long time ago, far far away" kinda ending. Was cool.

I pretty sure I'll skip this movie, even though I liked most of the series. The whole plot just got so sideways and muddled it became unwatchable. Too me it was like looking at the famous David statue in Florence and watching someone tagging it and calling it art! Terrible ending to the series, which held so much promise, but never delivered in my opinion.

As all TV series, BSG had its weak moments but I would never say it "never" delivered.

I know some folks don't like to say never, but in this case "NEVER" cannot be said loudly enough or often enough! BSG, disintegrated in the last season, like Starbuck blasting a Cylon into oblivion! Besides we all know "Scotty Doesn't Know" ! Jk, but I couldn't resist...cheers!
