Well not really being that into comic books and their characters (apart from the live action adaptations) I didn't really have high expectations of this, but I must say I genuinely enjoyed it. I have only managed to catch Hulk vs. Wolverine so far, but I will add my two cents in regards to Hulk vs. Thor when I've viewed that.
Hulk vs. Wolverine had a runtime by my calculations of around 37 minutes, so I really wasn't going to get a genuine plot or that much character depth. Well the story starts with X-Man, Wolverine being called into a remote and snowy location in which a small town has fell victim to the wrath of what the Americans call the Hulk. Wolverine must stop the Hulk before he finds another small town, but little does Wolverine know, all is not what it seems and Wolverine finds himself being re-united with his creator and some of his biggest enemies including Sabre tooth and Lady Death strike.
The overall tone of the piece is simply the violence of it all; there's no real dialogue that has any relevance and the plot is very basic even for an animation this short on time. I guess this is something definitely and primarily aimed at the types of people who have read the comics for years and have been begging for this to happen for twice as long. Who am I to know, maybe it's already happened in paper form and Marvel just took the decision to animate it for a new audience. Either way it's entertaining as hell.
I only gave it 3 stars for a number of reasons. Although it was genuinely better than I originally imagined, it didn't do anything for me that will have me remember it for a time. The brutality of some of the fights between Hulk and Wolverine made me cringe with the ferocity of it. There were times when I thought the violence was a bit too over the top and just un-necessary, but was still enjoyable. The characters were as you would expect them to be. Hulk is just a mindless violent beast and Wolverine is also a mindless violent beast who actually loves a good fight.
Another reason for just giving it 3 stars is that they're called all new Marvel movies. But what exactly constitutes the moniker of movie? Hulk vs. Wolverine was just over 35 minutes long and I have no doubt that Hulk vs. Thor will be roughly the same length. Even if you label the two of them as one combined piece, the length I still wouldn't define as a movie. The cover of the DVD appears much better than that of the animation within the film. Don't get me wrong, the animation isn't anywhere near awful or anything like that, but it's just very basic stuff that we've seen time and time again.
I would say that if you're thinking of checking this out, then you really need to be one of the guys who reads the comics and has wanted this for years. If not then you'll probably end up like me and although enjoying it, you'll feel like it didn't really serve any sort of purpose or explain anything to you.
What fun these two films are. Hulk VS Thor starts out with Odin going into a deep sleep once a year at which time the forces of evil descend upon Asgard to try to destroy it. Every year, however, their efforts are thwarted by Thor, God of Thunder, whose power is just too much for the forces of evil. Loki however decides to use the Incredible Hulk against Thor by separating Bruce Banner's conciseness from the Hulk entirely and to take control of the bruisers body. The battle that ensues between … more
HULK VS Being that I am a fan of Marvel Comics and just about every character that has come out of there you know that I had to have this. In fact I don't know why I have yet to review this up to this point. I remember seeing this on the shelf the day it was released and getting excited because I just knew this would be the best of the latest group of animated films from Marvel. So after calling my bro to come see this with me and since my girl … more
I think the biggest thing to come from this release though is that everyone wants to know when Deadpool will get his own film. If he does get one you better believe I will be buying it, and I won't wait so long to review it either. But enough about that and back onto this, this is an excellent set that seems to be the first in a line of vs films and if they are like this one then they will all be successful. I highly recommend buying this, skip a lame rental.
