While I was watching 'Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol' directed by Brad Bird...in IMAX, a thought kept drifting through my mind...Why am I finding this film so boring?...And why does everything look so familiar?
It wasn't until the drive home, that it hit me...Of course, everything looked so familiar...because I've seen it all before...the stunts, the chases, the fights, the plot...And that is why I found 'MI4'...BORING.
Okay, to be fair...not completely boring, but I was expecting so much more.
First there's the plot...The Kremlin has been bombed by a terrorist group and Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) along with his entire IMF team have been blamed for it.
The President activiates Operation Ghost Protocol, which means the IMF organization is disavowed...Love that word. Anyway to quote the film tagline...'No Plan, No Backup, No Choice'. Sounds exciting. Trust me...it isn't.
Anyway, Ethan must pull together a new team so they can go after...A mad, brilliant nuclear physcist (are there any other kind) who wants to destroy the Earth by starting a nuclear war.
And why does Mister Crazy Scientist want to destroy our lovely planet? Simple...he want to wipe out civilization, so we can start again. WE? Who's the WE that will be left after the planet is annihilated by a nuclear war?. I may not be a nuclear physicist, but I really thinks this idea sucks.
Plus, how many times have we seen a film where a mad nuclear physcist wants to destroy the world? Come on, couldn't the three writers that worked on the script come up with something slightly more original than that?
On the plus side, it's fun to watch Tom Cruise scale a 134 building in Dubai, run through a sand storm chasing the bad guys and kicking several people's butts...all with one leg.
All I can say is...Where is Philip Seymour Hoffman when you need him?. How great a character was he in MI3?
And that's the other problem...There are no interesting characters in this film.
Simon Pegg does bring comic relief as Benji, a computer whiz and Jeremy Renner is fun to watch, especially when he has to dive into a massive computer.
There's some attempt at a back story which I won't mention here. Wouldn't want to spoil all the surprises.
This is one of the rare times that the 'Two Jews On Film' are actually in agreement. Check out our video to see how many bagels we gave 'MI4 -Ghost Protocol'. The film opens in IMAX theaters Friday, December 16, 2011.

I am not a big Tom Cruise fan, but I really like this movie a lot. I thought the director did his homework well, as its the most like the original TV series of all the films. As usual I enjoyed reading your thoughts on the movie.

sounds like a standard action fare. After MI3, I wondered how they would make # 4. Wasn't Cruise's character married in the 2nd sequel? Sounds like they abandoned most of the things that made # 3 successful. I'll comment more once I've seen it. Thanks as always for your review! I'll make a badge for this one shortly. Cruise seems to be on a downward spiral after "Knight and Day"....

there is a little thing in regards to the marriage but it doesn't hold a candle to 3.

Good review. I am a Tom Cruise fan -- "Top Gun" is my fav -- and I loved watching all the Mission Impossible episodes when I was a kid glued to the TV. The earlier MI films were OK, but never really got up to the television standard. I did like the previews of Ghost Protocol and the stunts look amazing. I will not spend extra cash for IMAX but I will check this out. :)

About this movie
When a terrorist bombing destroys the Kremlin, the United States government initiates a black ops "ghost protocol" and disavows the entire Impossible Mission Force. Ethan Hunt and his team are to be blamed for the attack, but are allowed to escape as part of a plan to enable them to operate again outside of their agency.
However, Hunt is warned that if any member of his team is captured or compromised, they will be charged as terrorists planning to incite global nuclear war. He is forced to work with fellow ex-IMF agent Brandt, who knows more about Hunt and his past than even Hunt himself.
