Let me just say that I was one of the people who liked Alexandre Aja’s “Piranha 3D”. Sure, it wasn’t anything special and it really didn’t do much to expand on the Roger Corman produced and Joe Dante directed cult classic. But it was fun, campy, a little raunchy and made me scratch my head like “…is this what modern 3D had come to?” I wondered what I was going to be in for with this sequel “Piranha 3DD” so I went for a limited screening. But I guess I was sure to expect more of the same in this limited release. Well, I was right that I was in for more of the same, but it seems like director John Gulager’s sequel intends to take what Aja’s film had established to the limits of raunchy, morbid humor and questionable horror fun.

The film takes place a year after the first movie when the attack of the prehistoric piranhas on Lake Victoria made the place an abandoned spot. Now, a water park called “Big Wet” is about to make its grand opening and much to Maddy’s (Danielle Panabaker) chagrin, her stepfather Chet (David Koechner) has added an adult-themed water pool which has “water certified stripper-lifeguards” to the theme park. Be that as it may, Maddy is only a 49 % co-owner and she decides to lay low and just get re-acquainted with some old friends that include Shelby (sexy Katrina Bowden, American Reunion), Barry (Matt Bush), her ex-boyfriend Kyle (Chris Zylka), Ashley (Meagan Tandy) and Josh (Jean-Luc Bilodeau). But Chet seemed to have cut some corners to make the park more profitable and this has caused the prehistoric piranhas to emerge to attack the vacationing folk. Now, Maddy must find a way to save as many lives as possible with Barry’s help and the help of the most famous lifeguard alive….David Hasselhoff (who plays himself and oh, there is Christopher Lloyd and a returning Ving Rhames too)
Ok, director John Gulager’s intentions for the film is for it to be not to be taken seriously and I guess this accounts for the campy, over-the-top, crude and over-sexed atmosphere that he has painted this sequel. I mean, the film’s plot is your usual corrupt and greedy “who didn’t mean any harm” dude who causes a maritime disaster. There is something about how the film plays out that the script never intended to hide what it wanted to do. There is a subtle commentary about over-sexed teenagers and how ‘sex sells’. But then even from the beginning of the film (enter ‘dead animal flaming fart‘), the viewer can see that this is simply your raunchy sex comedy that uses hungry piranhas and blood and gore as its horror backdrop.
People who like raunchy, dirty humor will be right at home with “Piranha 3DD”. The film is not pretentious and takes everything to the limit. If you like stuff like that is ‘in your face’ over-the-top then you will like this movie. Ok, if this interests you- there is homage to ‘vagina dentata’ (Teeth), then there is a water hole that gets violated, a fish in the ass, a severed head between huge breasts, a baby piranha through the cooch (inspired by a special tiny species of eel), then you will love this movie. The dialogue and the characters themselves are pretty silly (there is the cop-jock and the sensitive geek, a virgin and a slut), but hey, what are you expecting in a movie that makes fun of David Hasselhoff?! Hey, Ving Rhames reprises his role in the first movie and he even gets some payback.
The film just appeared to want to exceed whatever the first film had presented and it does succeed in an undisciplined way. I know, the film is pretty silly, goofy and outrageous but I liked the morbid humor behind it all in the film’s first half. However, the direction did seem to have gotten away from itself as it seemed to get more raunchy and bombastic the more you get into the movie. Now if you are looking for a lot of blood and gore and breasts and asses then you will not be disappointed. The wet bloody hot bods are on full display as John Gulager does not hold anything back. He seemed to be on auto pilot as the film shifts from gore and funny bits in the later parts of the film. The film uses practical effects and some CGI to enhance the graphic details. I did not see this in 3D so I cannot comment how it enhances its fun factor. I did see several shots that could’ve easily been awesome on 3D, so I can imagine that it can be fun.
There is a lot of blood and gore to be had in the movie, and they were fun. But after awhile, it all seemed to be shallow, I felt that it could've used more blood and gore than the full frontal nudity (I am complaining about this?!). I enjoyed the first two acts of the movie, but after awhile it all seemed to have become a little too much as it felt like it wanted to be raunchy and gory just for the sake of being exaggerated and hysterical. There were moments that I felt like I was watching one of those Japanese 'Pink' violence movies. But I cannot knock a film for being like this, since it was clearly intended to be as such. “Piranha 3DD” is a bad movie, but it can be one so bad that it can be good. If my descriptions appeal to you, then go ahead and give it a look. The Beauty of a film is after all in the eyes of the Beer Holder.
RENTAL But Recommended to Fans of Raunchy Comedy horror [2 ½ Out of 5 Stars]

despite my rating and how it didn't give me the things I usually look for, I had a blast watching this movie. I mean with a dialogue that goes "Josh cut off his penis because a fish came out my vagina" is classic LOL!

Pure guilty and raunchy fun! Takes whatever the first movie did, and makes them a lot more raunchier and more outrageous with the stuff that made the first movie successful.
