Fourth episode of the Amazing Race 16
We begin this episode at the pit stop for the last leg of the race, which is in a small town in France. Here, the teams get their first clue for this leg of the race which is to drive themselves to the city of Reims. Once there, they must find the only outdoor statue of Joan of Arc, which is located outside of Reims' gothic cathedral. Once they find the statue, they must find a street musician playing a singing saw near the statue. Once they find the musician, she will give the teams their next clue. A few teams seem to have some trouble getting to the statue. Steve and Allie ask a couple of people as to its whereabouts. Dan and Jordan ask another local who says "cathedral", but Dan and Jordan believe that she has said "Cathy Drone" instead, lol. Brent and Caite go to an entirely wrong location and proceed to bicker with each other about it. Why am I not surprised? Brent and Caite.....not getting along.....who da've thunk it?? lol. This is not the last time that these two will be at each other's throats in this episode. Eventually, all the teams find the musician and she gives them their next clue, which is a champagne bottle cork with the words "Leclerc Briant" on it. Teams must figure out that "Leclerc Briant" is a wine place in Epernay. After the teams arrive there, they find the roadblock for this leg of the race. One team member has to use a rope and rappel themselves over 100 feet down into an old cavern inside the winery. Once the team member is down inside the cavern, they must search amongst many wine bottles for one of seven bottles that is specially marked with the amazing race colors on it. After the team member has found the correct wine bottle, they must bring it back upstairs and open it by using a sword to take the cork off of the bottle. When it opens, a small piece of paper will fly out of the bottle with their next clue on it. Most of the teams did quite well with this task. Brandy complained a little about having to rappel down a shaft, but whining is nothing new for her. The most notable item of interest with this task is that Jet and Cord got completely lost while trying to find this place. The cowboys drove to the wrong town entirely and lost valuable time as a result. By the time the Cowboys arrived at Leclerc Briant, they were trailing behind several of the other teams. These two cowboys, who dominated many of the earlier legs, seem to have started to slip a bit. We'll see if the Cowboys can keep it together for the remainder of this leg.
After the teams finish the Roadblock, they receive the clue in the wine bottle which simply says "Taittinger La Marquetterie". Teams must figure out that this is the name of a chateau located in the village of Pierry. This clue and the way that the teams dealt with it causes a lot of fumbles and missteps all around. Apparently, there is another place called "Taittinger" located in Reims which is the main headquarters for the winery there. However, the main headquarters is NOT where the teams need to go, but many locals direct the teams to this wrong location because it has the same name as the chateau that they're supposed to go to. This causes mass confusion as four of the seven teams go to this incorrect location first and lose much time as a result. I've heard many people speculate online that the producers did this on purpose knowing that the two locations with the same name would throw some people off. I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case. But even so, there's nothing unfair about it. It's not like one team had a major advantage over another. It was all luck of the draw. You had to be lucky enough to get the right local to guide you to the right location. Some teams got the right information from the get go, others didn't. That's how it works. It's not unfair, it's part of the game and every team had as much chance of going to the right place from the start as anyone else. Anyway, another notable item of interest here is that Steve and Allie ran into a slight scare when the front right bumper of their car ran over something and came loose, causing it to drag on the ground as they were driving. They were considering getting a replacement car from the producers, but luckily, Steve improvised a bit by using duct tape to secure the front bumper more securely to the car. Later, we hear Steve say that his wife told him to bring some duct tape with him on the race since it will fix anything. Boy, did that advice ever come in handy, lol. This makes me wish Steve's wife was on the race. If she's able to somewhat foresee things like this, imagine how great of a contestant she might have been, lol. The wife's advice saves Steve and Allie from falling behind and they continue on in the race.
Eventually, all of the teams reach the "Taittinger La Marquetterie" and find the detour for this leg of the race. The choice is between "Tower" or "Terra". In "Tower", teams must take 680 champagne glasses and build a tower approximately 15 levels high. After the tower is completed, the teams must then pour champagne into the tower from the top of it without any part of the tower collapsing. If the tower stays intact, the teams will receive their next clue. In "Terra", teams must search an entire vineyard field for one of seven specific grape clusters that has the Amazing Race colors attached to it. Once a team has found one of these grapes, they must hand them to the harvest foreman who will give the teams their next clue. Six of the teams completed the "Terra" portion of the detour while only one team (Dan and Jordan) succeeded in the "Tower" task. If I were on the Amazing Race, I would have done the Terra task in a heartbeat. That sounds much easier than stacking glasses that could easily break if the tiniest thing goes wrong. Most teams seemed to understand this and made the correct choice by searching the field. A couple of the teams weren't as quick to come to this conclusion though. Brent and Caite got lost trying to find the chateau and followed another team (Carol and Brandy) to the pit stop even though they hadn't done the detour yet. After this error, Brent and Caite finally get to the chateau where Brent decides rather intelligently to search for the grapes. Caite, however, is in super whiny complainy mode today and criticizes Brent for making this choice because she feels that stacking the glasses would be faster. After Brent and Caite search the field for a while and come up with nothing, Caite flat out screams at Brent and says everything is his fault since he made the wrong choice. Brent, having had enough of this crap, decides to cave in to Caite's demands and switch to the "Tower" option instead. Brent and Caite build the Tower of glasses, they begin pouring the wine, and......you guessed it......the tower completely collapses. The look on Caite's face is priceless (and you can see that look on her face in the photo I've put up for this paragraph. Rofl!!!). Brent and Caite head back out to the field to search for grapes again. They eventually find a pair of grapes marked with the Amazing Race colors and move on. Caite then apologizes to Brent for yelling at him. Sorry, but that doesn't cut it with me. Caite gave this man such a hard time about a very reasonable call that he made. Then, when they do it her way, her plan fails massively. If she had just shut up and listened to Brent, they would have been done and out of there. BUT NOOOOOO!!!! Caite has to be miss big shot know-it-all and put her team down even further in the toilet than they already are. I don't buy that half-baked apology at all. You shouldn't have yelled and gone off on him like that in the first place. On top of this, you only apologized when it was crystal clear that your plan was foolhardy. You should have apologized BEFORE the tower collapsed. That might have actually been meaningful. But you only did it AFTER it became apparently obvious how much of an utter idiot you were for suggesting the tower option in the manner that you did. You know, at this point, I really wouldn't blame Brent for breaking up with this screeching harpie. Brent is not perfect either, but he's far better than Miss "I'm going to whine and cry until I get my way and then say I'm sorry to cover up how horribly mean I am" Caite. The moment she gets eliminated (if that happens), I will be cheering very loudly. I'm sick of her.
I was quite sad to see my favorite team get the boot in this episode. I really wanted Jeff and Jordan to win this whole thing and now, that won't be happening. Oh well. I enjoyed watching them anyway and I think they did a good job even if they fumbled quite a bit over the last few episodes. But it's not all bad. Jordan received half a million dollars for winning Big Brother last year, so it's not like it's a total loss for her. Also, if Jeff marries her, he'll most likely benefit from her winnings too, so they both seem to be set financially. They're both a great duo and I'll miss seeing them on the Amazing Race every week. But who knows? If Big Brother or Amazing Race decides to do another All-Star edition, we might see Jeff and Jordan for a third time. I get the feeling we haven't seen the last of these two, lol. Just you wait. As far as the other teams go, Louie and Michael are still leading the pack and still maintaining their status as the team to beat on this race. Steve and Allie are staying strong even with all of their car troubles in this episode. Carol and Brandy still continue to complain about everything, but they're still hanging in there. Jet and Cord are slipping a bit, but they're moving along slow and steady. Dan and Jordan argue here and there, but overall, they've been a good team. Screechy Mcscreecherson and her helpless boyfriend are at their wit's end. They're going to be the next to go if they don't get their act together. And I for one am hoping they don't get their act together. The sooner that whiny brat goes the better.
