I like just about anything. My curiosity tends to be insatiable--I love the "finding out" and the "ah-ha" moments.
Usually I review a book or film with the intention of ranking it within its genre. If a romantic comedy works within its formula: it entertains, sparkles with witty dialogue and depicts men and women within the framework of their gender and sexual magic, its going to get a higher more favorable review. I am not going to berate something that belongs to a genre that I simply do not like.
If the subject of the review teaches/reveals or enlightens as well as entertains, so much the better. Unfortunately, the nature of the act of reviewing means mining for flaws as well as gems. What may appear to be minutia is meant to point out to the audience as well as the author or director just where the piece needed something more . . . or less. Reviewers are nitpickers--we pride ourselves on our ability to pick the legs off a mosquito--no harm towards insect rights intended.
The world is filled with creative people--each with a story to tell or a painting to show or a film to depict some human experience. I am honored to be an active participant in the act of creating.
