Herta Muller is a Romanian-born German writer, known for her extremely controversial writings that criticise the Romanian Communist-era and its oppressive dictatorship. Since her books were all originally written in German and only five of them were translated in English, Muller is not as well known outside of Germany.
Having studied German and Romanian literature at university, Muller cites both as a major influence in her own works. She led a tumultuous life within the confines of the Communist regime, and has also incorporated those hardships within her books. Her writing is in the self-described style, "autofiktion" - that is fictional stories based on her own life's experiences.
