Through the power of Googling I was able to find this movie for my mom who only remembered the line "2nd floor dungeon. Jewelry department" from the Elevator Song from The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T.
I had never heard of the movie before and my mom insisted we watch it. So I found it at Barnes and Noble and we sat down to watch this movie. I must say it has to be one of the best movies I've ever seen.
First it's written by Dr.Seuss so I was excited to see that not only was the script written like his books, but the sets and props looked like they were taken right out of his books too. The basic story is this:
Bart has only one enemy in the world: his piano teacher Dr. Terwilliker. Dr. T has a mad plan to force 500 young boys to practice at his magnificent piano 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The songs are adorable and the Dungeon Ballet had me in awe for 6 minutes.
It also takes you back to a time where being P.C. was unheard of. I was laughing at the script and amazed at what they got away with including in a movie over 50 years ago.
Another thing that makes the movie stand out is that the main character is a child. You just don't see that in movies anymore. There are only 3 principle adult roles in the film and all 3 are exaggerated. The mother is the damsel in distress. Dr. T is the villain. Mr.Zabladowski is the hero.
It's a great movie for children and adults and takes you back to another time where it took more than just being a pretty face to be talented.
I saw this many years ago as a child on TV. This was a fun film and very detailed as well. The 7 Faces of Dr. Lao was another favorite from that time period.
The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T. is a best known for being the only feature film ever written by Theodor Seuss Geisel ("Dr. Seuss"), who was responsible for the story, screenplay, and lyrics. It was directed by Roy Rowland.
