Dr. Rollin Daniel's: My chosen rhinoplasty (nose) surgeon

Disclaimer: I’m not a doctor, so my understanding of the details may be inaccurate.  But these are how I interrupted his words in my feeble mind,

Initially I was not going to see Dr. Daniel  because I really liked Dr. Frankel after my consultation that I had with him. He was also closer (Beverly Hills 15 miles away) vs Dr. Daniel (Newport Beach 45 miles away) .  But I bit the bullet and took the drive to Newport for a second opinion.  I’m glad I did!

If you don't want to read all this dilly dally, babble stables, then just know Dr. Daniel's did a great job, and I'm very pleased with the results.  I would never do it again, because it hurts like hell though (after all it is surgery).

Consultation

I came into the consultation with a negative attitude.  Like I said,  I really liked Dr. Frankel, and had my mind set on him.  When I met Dr. Daniel’s, I was initially put off by him.  It’s easiest to list the reasons:

  1. I already thought I had my surgeon; Seeing Dr. Daniel’s was to justify my decision.
  2. I was comparing Daniel’s office vs. Frankel’s.  Dr. Daniel’s office was more of a normal doctor’s office.  Don’t get me wrong, it was a nice doctor’s office, but just a doctor’s office.  Dr. Frankel’s office was incredible.  It was a beautiful office.  His office space was more of a high paid executive suite then a doctor’s office.  In retrospect.  I can appreciate that Dr. Daniel’s office was a normal office.  After all he doesn’t need the ‘flash’ to impress, because he is impressive by himself.
  3. Frankel seemed, serious and professional.  My initial reaction to Dr. Daniel’s was that he was a ‘goofy’ guy.  I guess goofy wasn’t the right word.  But where Frankel was serious, Daniel’s was joking around trying to make me at ease.
  4. I don’t know why, but when Dr Daniel’s asked what I was ‘in for’ it annoyed me.  (Once again I think this goes to my first point that I came in with a negative attitude)

The first 4 points above turned me off in the first 30 second.  After that I was ‘wowed’ by him as seen with the points below:

  1. He was incredible concerned with my height and weight.  He wanted to give me a nose that is appropriate to my size (6’1 210lb).  He wanted to make sure he didn’t put a ‘dainty’ nose on me because I’m larger then most of his patients.
  2. He would explain stuff in detail to me and my girlfriend.  He spend a good 20 min looking at my nose, and showing her different parts of it.
  3. He told me my nose is actually very fragile.   The reason why I was having trouble breathing was not because of my deviated septum, but because when I would breathe in, the sidewalls would collapse and not allow air to come in.  He then showed me exactly what he was talking about.  Basically, the walls of my nose have no cartridge to keep the nostrils open when I was breathing.  So I would breathe in, and my nose would close.  Hence not being able to breathe through my nose.
  4. My other concern was I wanted a more defined chin.  He said he would give me a chin implant.  We told him our concerns after talking with Dr. Frankel about having the chin look to big.  He told us that there are chin implants that fill in the sides, but not the chin itself.  That would help with giving it a more defined look.
  5. He also showed me the reason that my chin was not ‘defined’ was because of a muscle in my neck that is elongated.  (see pictures to see what I mean)  He told me he could cut the muscle, and overlap it so that it will give me a more defined neck i.e. ‘shadow’ along with that came some good ol liposuction.  When he was looking at my chin before surgery, he asked me if I had liposuction on my chin before.  I hadn’t.  He told me that I actually did not have much fat under the chin.  I guess I’m not as fat as I think I am, at least under the chin!   I don’t know if he did liposuction on me or not.
  6. Dr. Daniel’s does not have very many before and after images on his website compared to some of the other doctors.  That was a concern for me when I first went and saw him.  It was a needless concern though. He has hundreds and hundreds of past patient images at the office.  I liked that I saw images of other people who I had not seen on the website.  That was not my case for Frankel.  Daniel’s knew the images inside and out.  He would get one of his books of past patients and know exactly where to look for something that was similar to what would happen to me.
  7. Dr. Daniel’s didn’t have any imaging software.  At least he didn’t show me any.  He knew exactly what he wanted to do, how he wanted to do it. He had a clear picture in his head and was able to show concrete example of work he has done with his past patients.  I actually liked that he didn’t show me a image of what I ‘might’ look like.
  8. The whole staff was incredible nice and easy going.
  9. No consolation fee.
  10. Had another Pre Op appointment with Dr. Daniel’s and met Judy (Another doctor working with Dr. Daniel’s)  They answered any questions I had, and went over what to expect after the procedure.

I ended up going with Dr. Daniel’s because after my initial trepidation I realized he really knew his stuff. Simple as that.

Postop Appointment 1
My first post op appointment was about 4 days later.  This was to get my head wrap off and to check out my chin.  My girlfriend was in the bathroom when I got called in.  She had left her purse, so I grabbed it and brought it with me.  Amy (who works with Dr. Daniel’s) took the purse from me because I was not supposed to lift ‘heavy’ items.  Now I didn’t think a purse was heavy, but I appreciated that Amy was concerned about me lifting it.

Judy (a doctor that works with Dr. Daniel’s) and Dr. Daniel’s seemed in a bad mood that day, or just really frazzled.  It was hard to tell.  But they definitely weren’t themselves. I don’t know if it was because it was late in the day, or just had a bad day. They seemed to be rushed. Don’t get me wrong, they where fine, They answered the questions we had, they just were not their normal happy selves.

Post op Appointment 2
A week after surgery, I came back to the office to get my cast off.  I was wondering if they were going to be in the same mood as in Post op Appointment 1.  I was wondering if now that the surgery was done, if the mood they displayed was their ‘normal’ mood.  Well it wasn’t their normal mood.  They were their normal peppy selves; Incredible friendly and outgoing.  Dr. Daniel’s was making jokes which I thought to be funny.  Judy was also in a great mood and made me feel at ease again.  I guess they did just have a bad day.

They had me shower in the morning so that I could take of the cast easily.  I made sure I got a lot of water on the cast to make sure the cast would come off easily so it wouldn’t hurt.  The thing that hurt the most is the little ‘things’ they put in my nose.  They did not pack my nose (thank god)  but instead put little things inside of them.  When Dr. Daniel’s was taking them out it hurt like hell!

My Nose:
So I was scared to see my nose.  Wouldn’t you be?  I was shocked at how it looked (in a good way) It was such a drastic improvement.  Dr. Daniel’s also seemed ecstatic with the outcome.    I only have one picture right now of how my nose looks after 1 week.  I’m still incredible swollen in the picture, but you can easily see the difference.

My only concern now is with my left nostril. Inside it is partially blocked by some ‘skin’ that is blocking the airway.  It is also a wee bit smaller then my right one.  They said that the blockage will go down when the swelling goes down.  But I do have trouble breathing out of that side right now.

All in all I highly recommend Dr. Daniels.  He is a great doctor.  He made me feel comfortable, answered all my questions.  He didn’t seem like he was full of shit.  He seemed like he really cared about getting the best result for his patient.

When you said it hurts like hell, I presumed it's during the recovery stage? My ex-colleague did a nose job too and it made her looked entirely different so much so that I couldn't recognize her until she called my name & told me who she is! Btw, it's very fashionable for Koreans to go for plastic surgery. It's a thriving business to be in, I heard :-)

Sharrie, yea during the recovery stage, but it seemed that i was clenching my hands and feet during surgery, so those hurt like hell also when I woke up! Plastic surgery is very fashionable in the states too! After all we are a nation obsessed with celebrities.

If obsessed with celebrities, well... you blew your chances! There are actually 2 Hong Kong singers with similar nose, Jacky Chan & Jacky Cheung & I heard somewhere in geomancy that it was precisely their noses that bring in the bucks! ;-)

Interesting!!! No, not so much about the review but the fact that I was just having this experience of "attracting" things into my sphere. I had it a few days ago picking up the Grey Anatomy's DVD & now this review. Still puzzled me how it works. I had just started watching another Korean Drama & about 10 mins ago, the scene was that this guy is undergoing a plastic surgery & then I logged onto lunch & this review popped up in the rotation of featured review! That's like telepathy of some sort! I just can't believe it!!! OMG!

Great review, Seth.  It's really, really awesome that you shared your rhinoplasty experience with us, and even posted pics!  Having seen quite a few not-so-great rhinoplasty jobs, that's great that you were able to find a good surgeoun who helped a bit with your breathing as well as constructed a nose that was right for you.  Thanks for sharing, Seth!
