Totally Gay for the Web

being visible, staying safe. a constant balance game in the life of LTBTQ

  • Mar 14, 2010

"totally gay for the web" was a short session lead by heather gold. the conversation talked a lot about the importance of the internet within the queer community today.

heather talked about her personal story of coming out to herself and becoming comfortable in her own sexuality, when she was raised in a small town, without being able to connect with others like her. back before the internet, going to the library to look up the word "homosexual" and finding nothing in the card catalog. now the queer community is very active in online mediums in order to connect with others.

echoing what danah boyd was saying about privacy and control of one's online presence, heather also added we need to have a "safe" place in order to feel comfortable enough to be ourselves. sadly, it's easier to fall into the "outside in" way of discovering/forming ourselves (instead of being comfortable enough with ourselves internally first), since online public communities are not always safe from lashback and ridicule. when we are in a physically safe place in our lives, many find it easier to handle more of the internet lashback.

discussion was also opened up to the floor and the topic of creating a more queer friendly/accessable  website would be to not limit contact form/signup to binary gender norms.

i feel this session was way too short. i would have loved to have more time to open up the floor to more conversation and stories of LGBTQ people in the tech and social media world. this session was just a portion of a rolling panel lumping all the "minority groups" together. i think SXSW would benefit from including more diversity in it's sessions, it might even draw a more diverse attendance.

Awesome review, Tracy! I studied human sexuality in college with a huge emphasis on LBGTQ studies, so I'm totally interested in this and I can see why you felt this session was too short; this could've been an entire class for a semester! Thanks for sharing. This is some really interesting stuff!
