The Forerunner for Today's Fitness Craze

  • Jan 24, 2011
I remember watching Jack's show (I think it was called Shape Up With Jack LaLanne) every day as a little kid and doing jumping jacks along with him. Jack got me very excited at an early age to do exercise, which until then was a boring, necessary evil. As far as I know Jack started the national gyms (Bally's used to be Jack LaLanne Health Clubs). As he got older he would always look the same, except a little grayer. He showed us all that living a fit life could keep us spry and productive well into our 90's.

I understand Jack used to do a lot of publicity stunts (swimming across rivers with a lot of equipment to weigh him down) and was also famous for the juicer informercials. It seems without Jack, the fitness craze and all the fancy diets would have taken a lot longer to take hold. Thank you so much for your contribution to a healthy lifestyle, Jack. You will certainly be missed!

I think my generation only really knows Jack LaLanne through his juicer commercials, but wow, I had no idea he had a TV show and that his gyms turned into Bally's! I also had no idea what an impact he had on the fitness industry until I read some news articles about him last night. What a guy. Great tribute, Michael!

I agree that LaLanne did a lot to promote fitness in this country. (I always found him dorky and annoying, I'm afraid!) You've provided him with a nice tribute with this review, Michael.
