John Wayne didn't receive many honors for the movies he made.  That's probably because his greatest role was playing himself.  He invented the name, the walk, the drawl that nearly the entire world has come to know.   He portrayed what the people wanted to see.  He gave us our American hero.

That said, he did make some pretty great films in the process.  Some of my favortes include Stagecoach, They Were Expendable, Operation Pacific, The Quiet Man, Fort Apache, Rio Bravo, The Sands Of Iwo Jima, The Searchers (for which I think he should have earned an Academy Award).   McClintock! is one of the funniest movies I've seen.  He did have a few questionable roles (Ghengis Khan, for one, in The Conqueror) but that can be overlook considering the many, many wonderful movies he also made.

He was an incredible man & an incredible actor that should never be forgotten.

My whole fam calls my grandpa John Wayne, since he died before I got a chance to know him- I always look to John Wayne to try to imagine what he must've been like. John Wayne is a cultural icon so much so that you don't even need to have seen any of his movies to know how he acted. Thanks for this great review! Have you read @drifter51's review of The Quiet Man?

One of the great movie stars. Not a terrific actor - when you watch one of his movies, you're seeing John Wayne play John Wayne, and John Wayne was a single-note character. But a great star who could light up a screen.

About this actor

The man we know as "the Duke" was born in Winterset, Iowa on May 26, 1907.  His given name was Marion Michael Morrison.  His parents were Clyde & Mary Morrison & he had one brother, Robert.

His family moved to California for health reasons & Duke Morrison attended Glendale High School.  He was an excellent student & received an athletic scholarship to the University of Southern California.  He served as a relief player with future co-star & friend Ward Bond.

In order to earn money for school, Duke began working for Fox Studios as a prop man.  He appeared in his first movie, Browns of Harvard, in 1926.  In 1928, while working  (as a goose herder) on the set of the film, Mother Machree, Duke was noticed by the director John Ford.

After leaving school, in 1929, Morrison appeared in several minor films throughout the 1930's & continued to work as a prop man, as well.  His big break came in 1939, when he appeared as the Ringo Kid in John Ford's Stagecoach.

His star would continue to rise throughout the 1940's & by the 1950's, he was America's favorite star, an honor he would continue to hold well after he was gone.   His career spanned 50 years & he made over 150 motion pictures, 170 television appearances, & several public service ads,  documentaries, & radio programs.

He was married 3 times.  First to Josephine Saenz in 1933.  They had...
