A Department Store

Macy's has never let me down.

For as long as I can remember, Macy's has been the "cool kid" store. It was the place you can count on that wouldn't mess around when it came to giving you a nice shirt. Though it never meant that the price was right, you always knew you were to definitely find something at Macy's.  They have a good mix of brands that are well known and on days when they have a sale, you'll know it's on!

Much of my wardrobe has come from Macy's, and so has many of the gifts purchased in my family. And for the most part, I've been satisfied with everything I've bought from Macy's (but that has to do more with the brands you pick rather than the actual store).  They make gift shopping pretty easy for the most part. It's easy to find quality, nice looking items for decent prices for everybody. While Macy's won't always be the cheapest, if your gift is for family or good friends, it'll be worth it, for sure.

Gift cards from here are the best in my opinion. Nobody will give you the guilt trip of selling out to a gift card from Macy's...it's one of the few stores that you can get away with it.  Who can say they can't find anything they want from Macy's?

Tips when shopping at Macy's:

  • Hit the sales racks first. I've noticed shirts that arrive on display and then are quickly put to mark down racks in less than 1 or 2 months, depending on how they sell. If something unpopular is your taste, you'll be in luck.
  • Watch for the "REQUIRED FOR RETURN" tags on items on clearance racks. While you'll find many of the same items on sale, check the tags on items which you only find one or even a few. If you find the tag that says "REQUIRED FOR RETURN" - then know you're holding a used/returned item, and check for any damage/heavy use.
  • Visit all parts of the departments' sales racks for more deals. Often times you will find yourself in one part of the department and find a sales rack for a totally different type of clothing. For example, I was in the formal section looking at dress shirts and ties and ran into a rack that was full of Young Men's clothing. And when I walked over to check out the Young Men's, I saw racks of Athletic Attire clothes that were on sale. If you actually walk through the whole department, you'll find the racks dispersed throughout, regardless of what type of clothes are being marked down.
  • Look out for "EDV" deals. Just like grocery stores, you'll find great alternatives to brands that at times may be too expensive to buy. These items are labeled as "Every Day Values" and usually are found near or right next to premium brand name items. This is great for things like belts and ties, which are sometimes way too expensive for what they are.

Everyone in my family has always been a huge fan of Macy's... except for me :x  I guess it's because I'm a girl and have so many more options, but it sounds like I should give them another go!  Thanks for all the great shopping tips, Angelo! :)

Nice write-up! Macy's has never been one of my personal faves but maybe I'll take another look.

A couple of weeks ago I was perusing the mens shoe department at the Macy's Mens store.  I was greeted by a very kind Sales Representative who was very helpful and shared my overall sarcastic view of the world.  I ended up buying a pair of Chuck Taylor's and agreed to apply for the Macy's Card.  Not shockingly I was approved (because my credit is so damn stellar...right!) and I was told of all the benefits that having this card in my wallet would bring.  I walked out …

I admit it. I am biased against Macy's, solely because they bought-out a longtime Chicago staple (and landmark), Marshall Fields.     Turn the mall stores into Macy's, but really, did you HAVE to do the same with the landmark flagship store on State St?     Needless to say, I have yet to patronize Macy's since the takeover, and it's been about 2 years.
