I prefer my news delivered on a plate of sarcasm

The Colbert Report starting Stephen Colbert manages to walk the fine line between news and entertainment.  As a spin-off from The Daily Show with John Stewart, Colbert plays the role of the conservative antithesis of Steward.  However, Colbert's take is often FAR right of the right-wing which gives the show much of its humor and sarcasm.

I've grown quite tired of the local news stations to the point where they are completely unwatchable.  In a half hour, you get some weather (not much changes in Southern California day to day), some sports (ESPN has better coverage), and then either a car chase or a "heart strings" story.  Not a lot of substance for putting up with 15 minutes of car ads and male enhancement commercials.

In contrast, the Colbert Report actually covers headlines of nationwide importance.  And rather than just spouting off headlines, Colbert actually provides a  bit of journalism and commentary.  That's not to say that the Colbert Report counts as a hardcore news show -- that's akin to saying Lucky Charms are part of a healthy breakfast.  But through the jokes and sarcasm, there actually is a decent amount of information in the show which in the best case provokes the viewer to seek more information -- otherwise, it's a well written show that provides entertainment with a glimpse of real news.

I have never watched this show, but I'm sold. Forget NPR/PBS. I didn't know there were other alternatives the car chases and weather.

About this actor

Wiki

Stephen Tyrone Colbert (pronounced /koʊɫˈbɛɹ/;[7] born May 13, 1964) is an American comedian, satirist, actor and writer, known for his ironic style (particularly in his portrayal of uninformed opinion leaders), and for his deadpan comedic delivery.[2]

Colbert originally studied to be an actor, but became interested in improvisational theatre when he met famed Second City director Del Close while attending Northwestern University. He first performed professionally as an understudy for Steve Carell at Second City Chicago; among his troupe mates were comedians Paul Dinello and Amy Sedaris, with whom he developed the critically-acclaimed sketch comedy series Exit 57.

Colbert also wrote and performed on the short-lived Dana Carvey Show before collaborating with Sedaris and Dinello again on the cult television series Strangers with Candy. He gained considerable attention for his role on the latter as closeted, gay history teacher Chuck Noblet. It was his work as a correspondent on Comedy Central's news-parody series The Daily Show, however, that first introduced him to a wide audience.

In 2005, he left The Daily Show to host a spin-off series, The Colbert Report. Following The Daily Show's news-parody concept, The Colbert Report is a parody of personality-driven political opinion shows such as The O'Reilly Factor. Since its debut, the series has been successful, establishing itself as one of Comedy Central's highest-rated series, earning Colbert three Emmy nominations and an ...
