A Great Actor Slowly Falling Because of His Public Persona

It's hard to deny that Tom Cruise is a pretty talented actor.  He is.  But unfortunately when you become a big star--especially as big as Tom Cruise is--you start to lose a private life.  And your actions become more important to people than the work itself.  Sure, we can berate Tom Cruise for his stunt on Oprah, his fascination with Scientology that goes a little beyond crazy at times... but deep down you still have to remember that this guy did do such classic films as Risky Business, Top Gun and Jerry Maguire.  So to be fair to Tom Cruise, I'll give him credit where it's do.  He's a fine actor and showcases a lot of talent.  Most of us probably still enjoy some of his films out there now.

This is going to be a pretty short review.  If you've read my other reviews... that's really saying something.  I'm not going to defend Tom Cruise.  He has done a few things that are crazy.  He has a team of lawyers that will go out and sue anyone for any mundane thing.  If you so much as utter that Tom Cruise might be gay, he'll sick his lawyers on you like a guy would sick dogs on a T-Bone steak.  He does have a bit of an ego problem, and from looking at him public... perhaps a bit of anger issues.  On the set of Valkyrie he got upset with a guy who farted during a moment of silence.  Inapprorpiate of the guy who farted?  Sure.  But just the same it was also quite inappropriate of Cruise to fly off the handle the way he did.  Between things like that and what you read about in the papers... yeah, you probably wouldn't want Tom Cruise as your friend in real life.

I will say, however, that on a personal level... none of us actually KNOW Tom Cruise.  We only know what we see on television and whatnot.  Along those lines, to judge his talent based on his personal life just seems wrong in many respects.  Tom Cruise most definitely doesn't have a great public persona, but each and every time I've seen him in the movies I've come away impressed.  Even when the movie is a bad movies like Lions for Lambs.  He still gives a good performance.  On screen it's sometimes easy to forget about his private life and what he does.  If Tom Cruise wants to believe in Scientology, far be it from me to tell him he's crazy.  I don't know Tom Cruise personally, so it's no business of mine as far as I'm concerned.  Tom Cruise is an actor, and as such when I see Cruise acting that's what I want to focus on.

Yes, his public life has taken a toll.  But this brings me to my final point.  Sure we can call Tom Cruise an asshole, but I find it odd because there are so many jerks in life.  The only reason it's so easy to focus on Tom Cruise is because he's famous.  If say... a guy kicks a dog and breaks his ribs and he isn't famous... nobody cares.  But if it's a celebrity it can destroy them.  This is what has happened to Tom Cruise and it's pretty sad that it has.  Even sadder is that people will use that sort of thing to say he isn't talented or that his movies are bad.  I'm not quite sure how people make that leap.  "I loved Top Gun until I found out Tom Cruise was a scientologist..."  Huh?  Cruise being a scientologist has no real effect or impact on how good of a job he does in his movies, and it definitely doesn't have any effect on the films he did before he admitted that he was.  Does that make sense?  It's important to separate his Private and Public persona from what he does on screen.  I'm not a huge Tom Cruise fan, but I will say that he's a good actor.  Just because he's crazy out in public doesn't mean he's suddenly bad at what he does.  I can't reconcile why people think that sort of leap is even logical to make.

So think about next time you're talking about Tom Cruise.  Is he a bad actor or does he just have a bad Public Persona?  My guess is that he has a bad Public Persona.  Because he still manages to do a good job in the majority of the films he stars in.

nice commentary on Cruise; I usually see celebrities as public figures that the only relationship with them is through their movies. Cruise has had some good flicks and that's about all I care about him. Great work!

Cruise hasn't gotten better with age as far as his films go, but he hasn't gotten worse either.

Outstanding, highly underrated actor. In my personal pantheon of movie stars - not necessarily actors, but STARS - Cruise ranks second only to Paul Newman.

It's amazing how people overlook someone's career and the whole reason they're in the public eye in the first place when that person does something they don't agree with.  Tom Cruise is one of the best actors of this generation and that deserves acknowledgement.  Yeah, maybe people don't agree with his beliefs and maybe he has made some poor choices of how to behave in public (chuckle), but he still is very good at what he does and I think its a shame that his ability to have successful …

Tom Cruise
I used to like Tom Cruise.  But now I don't.  As soon as he joined Scientology he became a crazy crazy guy!  He jumps on coaches, professes his love to everyone and in general is off his rocker.  But hey, can you blame a guy that has all the money in the world, marries my future wife and thinks that chemical imbalances really don't exist!   Now I could tell you my all the weird things about him, but there are sites dedicated to it. One such site is http://www.tomcruiseisnuts.com/ …

Movie stars don't get any bigger than Tom Cruise - limitless money and international fame.  He is an Oscar worthy actor, and deserved one for Fourth of July (just bad luck/timing that he had to battle Daniel Day Lewis / My Left Foot).  There's no way that kind of money/fame and power won't have a dramatic effect on your general psyche.  That said, many superstars of his caliber have managed to grow and age very gracefully (see Paul Newman and Robert Redford).  It's a heart breaker …
