Madge Pulls out All the Best

  • May 28, 2004
From the previous reviews, you get the idea that this CD is great. There are a few things that, in my opinion, keep it from being an ultimate collection. As other reviewers noted, there are some hits that are left out. I'd had liked to have "This Used to be my Playground" included as well as "Nothing Really Matters" which while it wasn't as large of a hit that many hoped, had spawned many great remixes. That's another point; some of the songs on here are in their edited/remixed version. I think the best example is "Human Nature" which is tidied up from the great original form as it was on Bedtime Stories.

If you haven't listened to any Madonna before, this is still a great place to begin though. This and the Immaculate Collection are not all but a good collection of big hits for Madonna. It's a fun, upbeat listen, something to get you on your feet and at other times, something to get you reflecting on your own views, opinions and life. For any Madonna fan, or simple a fan of pop, this is in my opinion an essential for your collection. This is Madonna through her may re-inventions. It leaves you wanting more which a great thing. Perhaps on down the line, she'll have enough material to release a greatest hits spanning her entire career that'll include all the hits that some fans noted are missing. Until then, this is a great start to revealing this pop star and cultural icon's influence on our culture.

About this album

So there's this pop singer... you may have heard of her? Madonna, she's called, and the word is that she's basically all image; she went through a put-your-hands-all-over-my-body phase, then she got spiritual, and then she started wearing cowboy hats. Between all the gossip columns and photo shoots, though, she's left an unmatched trail of devastatingly wonderful singles--roaring dance records, tender ballads, and a curious combination of the two that is her personal specialty ("Secret" and "Ray of Light"). How many artists' best-of-the-second-decade collections crowd out legitimate hits? ("American Pie," anyone? "This Used to Be My Playground"?) Unlike 1990'sImmaculate Collection,GHV2doesn't have any new material; "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina," fromEvita, and the glorious '60s pastiche "Beautiful Stranger" are the only songs that haven't appeared on a Madonna album before. But it compresses her past 10 years worth of records into an hour of one peak after another.--Douglas Wolk
