Best forgotten debut album of 1982

Marshall Crenshaw was born and raised in Detroit, and in the late 1970’s responded to an ad in Rolling Stone that resulted in his portraying John Lennon in the “Beatlemania” road show for a couple of years. After this, he settled in New York and started focusing on his own music. His band consisted of himself (guitar, vocals), his brother Robert (drums, vocals) and Chris Donato (bass, vocals). They were signed by Warner Brothers and “Marshall Crenshaw” was released in April of 1982. It is full of up-tempo jingly-jangly songs with rockabilly and R&B roots. Every song on the album is great, and all but one (“Soldier of Love”) are Crenshaw compositions. In 2000, Warner Brothers and Rhino put together a reissue of Crenshaw’s debut album. In addition to the 12 tracks from the original album, the reissue contains several demos, B sides, and live tracks. Here is what Marshall Crenshaw has to say about the original album in the liner notes of the reissue: “This stuff is pretty celebratory throughout and was deliberately designed as music to dispel anxiety – my own and anybody else’s.” Crenshaw is yet another great musician and songwriter who’s not received the attention and critical acclaim he deserves. Go out and get the reissue, you’ll be tapping your foot and smiling in no time.
