Start Like a Tiger, Finish Like a Phil

I have been around the sport of Tennis for 25 years.  Grew up with Borg, McEnroe and Conners - watched Agassi, Sampras and Courier climb the ranks, and now get to sit back watch the Nadal / Federer rivalry.

Although its getting to be one-sided in favor of Nadal, Federer is still the best player I have seen in my generation.  His game is classic and smooth, which allows him to excel on all surfaces...not just grass, or not just clay...a sign of a great player.

Additionally he (at least until recently) wins when he gets to a final, and maintained similar type statistics to Tiger who rarely, if ever loses when starting the final round of a tournament with the lead...another sign of great talent and mental strength.

But those stats seem to be falling off as his mental block with Nadal and now Andy Murray seem to have him derailed.  Although that doesn't change my opinion of him as a +5 in my book, I have a sense his Tiger like start will fade to a Phil type finish of talent and tournmanet wins, but not many more slams.

I have to say that I predicted the same Phil type finish after the Australian Open loss -- but boy were we wrong. That said, if Nadal stays healthy, I think he will continue to consistently beat Federer. Much of the potential loss of dominance isn't totally the new players, so much as the deterioration of Federer's return game and ground strokes.

nice review Pete!! i'm a littel bummed you limited your review to his actual tennis and you didn't delve into his fashion sense... for example how he likes to have a wardrobe change before the trophy presentation at Wimbledon. Don't get me wrong, he looks good in all white blazer and slacks, but changing into that on the court seemed a bit odd.

So rumor is that "the Fed" read the review on Lunch back in April and proceeded to win back to back slams just to prove it wrong!...Dude is amazing, even if he wears the white blazer and slacks!

he is unreal. that Wimbledon win against Roddick last weekend... unbelievable. He is making everyone he plays against better too. Nadel, now Roddick... he is elevating their games to new levels.

Great review...I get into constant arguements with my boyfriend (a Nadal fan) over who's the better player- I still say Roger! Not only is his game smooth but, he's just so quick. He gets back balls I NEVER would've thought possible.
