What do you think of when I say Iowa? Corn?? I say Slipknot =)

Since the fiery crash of Buddy Holly's plane in 1959, rarely have the words "Iowa" and "rock and roll" been used in the same sentence. As we've come to know it, Iowa means corn, livestock, conservatism, and meat packing plants.  Iowa is full of with kids dying from boredom, and with closed-minded politicians trying to keep their little slice of America sane, quiet, and "Leave It To Beaver"ish. But the kids aren't all right - they're getting ansy.

And so Slipknot was born - or created - and Des Moines, Iowa would never be thought of in the same way again. The band is made up of nine native Iowans: DJ Sid, drummer Joey, bassist Paul , percussionist Chris, guitarist Jim, sampler Craig, percussionist Shawn, guitarist Mick, and vocalist Corey. NINE people sounds like an awfully large number for a metal band, but percussionist Shawn wouldn't have it any other way. He was quoted as saying "Our music is so reliant on each other that if one guy is gone, it just wouldn't be our songs. Without one person, something is really, really missing. Everybody has to be present. Even the littlest things make our songs magical."

I was introduced to Slipknot back in the '90's at the same time I was introduced to other heavy bands like Korn, White Zombie, and Nine Inch Nails. Since that time, I have watched them grow into the superband they have become. Each song they've come out with has shown how much they have grown as a band, and I have high hopes that they will only continue to get better as time goes on.

The main reason I am a fan of these guys (other than the home state similarity) is because they have such a wide variety of sound to their music. When you think of heavy metal, more than likely it involves a lot of guitar, drums, and some man screaming at the top of his lungs in a non-comprehensible voice. Not Slipknot. Yes they have plenty of guitar and a whole wall of sound from their drummers, but Corey can actually sing, and sing well. While he does use his "mean" voice in a lot of their songs, he can also croon with the best of 'em.

Slipknot will always be big. I don't listen to them, but I have always been curious about their live shows!

Simply put, this is one of the biggest disgraces to music, ever.  Much like Disturbed, Slipknot is "metal" music for depressed teenagers who either don't know what metal music is, or worse, actually hate it.  This circus of a band has nine members, though in the few times I listened to them, I only heard about four or five of the members.  Aside from the redundancy of extra members, this band seems to care more about dressing up in "scary" outfits rather than …

slipknot. oh how every depressed teenager loves them. there high strung lyrics, never ending, blasting drums and shredding guitar are what make them. its not that hard with 9 members though. just throw a lot together and make it sound brutal. a favorite of mine for years, you couldnt imagine how many times i overplayed there songs. i will be a "maggot" for life, even when they're gone ill still love them.
