I was introduced to the band U2 in 1995 when I first caught their music video for "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me" on MTV. Being 13 years old, I thought the song was pretty cool. Then again, in those days I was into anything that was in the Top 40.
Somewhere down the line I became exposed to U2's bigger hits like "Sunday, Bloody Sunday" and "With Or Without You." I thought both of these songs were 'mediocre at best.' U2 remained relevant throughout the '90s releasing successful records like "Achtung Baby, " Zootopia" and "Pop."
U2 have always been a giant band that I've easily ignored. I just couldn't get into their music, that's all. If a song of their's came on the radio, I would simply change the dial.
I began to strongly dislike U2 around 2000 when "All That You Can't Leave Behind" was released. Perhaps it was the fact that "Beautiful Day" and " Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of" were played to death on both TV and radio. Or maybe it was because everyone and their mom would constantly ridicule me for not listening to U2. "How can you not like them man? They are rock legends!"
How could I not? The same reason I don't like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin or Nirvana. I found all their songs to be 'not that great' and I am not going to pretend that I worship them, just to fit in.
U2 released their newest full-length, "No Line on the Horizon," this year and continue to be everyone's favorite modern rock band ... but I still don't understand why. Heck, even my idol, Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day, loves U2. They even did a song together in 2006! It doesn't matter what I think though, everyone has an opinion, and while I am changing the dial every time "Vertigo" comes on the radio, 50,000 people a night are singing along to that very song at stadiums around the World.
One of my very favorite bands. U2 bears their soul on every record, wandering spiritually and ideologically, bringing attention to questions great and small, and always shedding light on the ugliest and most beautiful aspects of life.
Music is my life. It's almost all I think about. I'm here to talk music with you. I I'm a new edition to the Lunch team, but promise to be just as helpful with almost anything/everything that you need. … more
