Te-queasy: more than just a girl drink...

  • Jan 11, 2000

Pros: The pre-eminent pre-teen decade's pre-teen beverage

Cons: Unpleasant knowledge that people thought of this, thought well of it, made it, marketed it, and are actually selling it

...it's a teen-aged 'girl drink'!

Cleverly nick-named 'Te-queasy' early on by me (if you did not have a point in your adolescence when you threw up thanks to beer and tequila, well, you're in the wrong section of Epinions), this tastes almost exactly like you'd expect it to -- cheap, light beer, with accents of fake lime and yukky tequila mixed in.

Having spent many a year drinking cold beer through scorchingly hot Canadian summers, I'm a big fan of 'lime and lager.' I can also accept eccentricities like dropping a shot of stronger stuff into your mug, and flavoured fruit beers, but this simply goes too far, both in concept and execution. It's sugary, it's generally unpleasant; it has all the disadvantages of beer (hangovers, bathroom visits) with none of the advantages (unless you are under fifteen, you're going to put this sugar swill aside long before you get drunk).

I tried this in a mild-mannered biker bar near Wheeler Hot Springs, CA. The bartender hadn't tried it and admitted to some humiliation in carrying it; I got curious, and had him pour out a glass for himself, me, my drinking buddy, and a friendly, bearded fellow to my right. It ended up being on the house, and the consensus -- bizarre sugary junk -- was unanimous among four very diverse beer fans. It probably has a market, but it really doesn't belong amongst beer.
