Not a web design book, but great for what it does

This book doesn't get into aesthetic or content issues at all, but it is an excellent resource for the software. It begins with a very good chapter on preparing and planning your website (I love the part where it suggests that you ask yourself "Why am I doing this?"). It then moves on to installing and setting up Dreamweaver.

From there, the book takes you through a good range of tasks, supplying through its online component the files you need to practice if you're a real beginner. Work through the book, and you'll really know your software.

If you already know your software pretty well, though, you'll still find this book valuable. It's designed so that you can pick a topic and use it as a reference, and this is where I think it really shines.

Say you want to create and edit a jump menu. There's a two-page spread for this, color coded to make it easy to find. There's a bar on the left that takes you through the basic steps, clearly labeled with numbers. If you need more detail, you'll find it in the main section of the page, with clearly labeled screenshots and careful explanation. If you want to understand the process thoroughly, you'll find the information you need. If you just want to do the task and move on, you can follow the step by step directions without getting bogged down in discussions.

This book is, in short, designed a lot like a website.

Whether you're just starting with Dreamweaver, moving up to CS5, or are just one of those who learns software on a Need to Know basis, you'll find this an indispensable reference.
