George Orwell's 1945 satirical novel that looks at a revolution of barnyard animals against their owners and then each other.
< read all 66 reviews Back in high school though we studied the book thoroughly for external exams, it was only after getting out into the real world that we fully grasped some of what the writer was trying to get across. At the time it was funny and quite interesting. The idea of talking pigs and cows was hilarious. At the time of reading the book I went through a rollercoaster of emotions, sorrow for the horse boxer, anger at the pigs, disdain for Molly.
I would recommend it to high school students in the same way it was introduced to me. That was the right time (grade 10 / 4th form) because if we were any younger we probably wouldn't understand fully what we were reading and any later and most of us would be out of school with very few having time to read such a book. Some would be having to deal with the working world and others having to deal with more serious studies.
The characters were really well developed, he did an excellent job there. i could relate to every one. Can easily be compared to the people in our society today.
Metaphor, similie, irony........is there any on the list that he didn't use? That is one of the reasons this book was used to test us for external exams.
I am in my 40s now, I had done the book in high school. That was many many moons ago so to give an accurate answer to this is a bit tricky. I guess one could say the more things change is the more they remain the same.
This book is in a class by itself, never came across anything like it back then or since.
I haven't seen the movie, if one has been made that is.
This guy George Orwell seems like a God compared to some of who I see masquerading as writers today. I plan to write a book one day soon and if I do half as good a job as he did I will be satisfied.
i personally prefer to read a physical book as against an e-book. That is my last resort. Sometimes i just want to sit under a tree or in a tree and read. Turns me off does e-books. You can watch a soccer game at home or go to the stadium, you're watching the same game but trust me, its different.
I'm new to this site but it seems worth exploring. I have one or two concerns about the site but sometimes if you say something people think you're rude. Haven't made up my mind yet.

A farm is taken over by its overworked, mistreated animals. With flaming idealism and stirring slogans, they set out to create a paradise of progress, justice, and equality. Thus the stage is set for one of the most telling satiric fables ever penned--a razor-edged fairy tale for grown-ups that records the evolution from revolution against tyranny to a totalitarianism just as terrible.
