Sophie Kinsella is an outstanding author. She writes comedy like no other novelist I’ve read. Can You Keep a Secret is one of the first books I recommend to all my friends when they are on the look out for an awesome chick lit read.
I started this book on a long plane ride. I laughed out loud probably every five minutes. Needless to say the person sitting next to me thought I was crazy. This is by far my favorite Sophie Kinsella novel.
The main character, Emma, is very lovable and very funny. The novel starts out with her blurting out her life story (every embarrassing secret included) to the man sitting next to her. The only thing to keep her mind off the incredibly turbulent flight is to just keep talking and embarrassing herself more and more. When the flight is finally over, she was glad to never have to see that man again…
Yet the mystery man who sat beside her on the plane turns out to be Jack Harper, an American CEO of Panther Cola, the company she is working for in England. Emma must face him at work everyday during his weeklong trip to the UK. His presence makes her life even more chaotic and a hilarious and seemingly unending series of embarrassing events occur. A story of love, scandals, competition and sex unfolds as Emma tries to keep her head on straight and her life in line. Definitely a must read if you’ve read any of Sophie Kinsella’s other books, or just love a good light read. I liked this way better than the Shopaholic series, so definitely give it a try.
