Watching the movie companion, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory at about the age of eight, I felt I just was given my cinematic experience equivalent to my generation's The Wizard of Oz.

Now past forty, I am still enchanted by the same movie, but it has taken me this long to take the above advice from the Oompah Loomphs given about Mike Teavee who held my closest vice.

So enthralled was I to own and see this classic gem, that I had to take the joyride in reverse: And now, finally, I have actually read Dahl's children's novel and seen for myself what it is like to take my own advice to this generation so attached to gadgets: Reading does, indeed, exercise the mind's muscles, exerting the VCR of one's imagination.

Yes, there are plenty of differences between the book and the movie, and while I'll never know what it would have been like to read the book before the movie as a kid, I at least have been able to save some literary enjoyment that can extend childhood into my middle years.

Both the book and the movie are a juvenile extention of Dante--The Purgatorio, that is--but without its grimness nor some of the sterness of Hilaire Beloc, whose moral lessons in rhyme resemble only his in structure--rather than whimsey.

Whatever stage of childhood you may be in, even if it is rediscovery, it is never too late to read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and for all it's mindport, now's as good a time as any.

Illustrated by Quentin Blake    OK, so reading this after seeing the new movie, where Johnny Depp appears to channel Michael Jackson in one of the oddest performances ever on film, I must say that Johnny Depp actually captured the essence of Dahl's Wonka very closely.     Some of the things that I thought were added to the movie for special effects impacts (like the glass elevator crashing into Charlie's house) were actually direct from the book.    Dahl's …

Childrens classic
This book has only two emotions: Sympathy and joy. Sympathy for the condition of the family and joy for the rest of the book. Its an all happy, full of surprises book that's great not only for the kids, but for the entire family. Even teenagers will enjoy reading this. Charlie and the Chocolate Factoryand its sequel,Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, along with Roald Dahl's other tales for younger readers, make him a true star of children's literature. Dahl seems to know just how far to go with his oddball fantasies; inCharlie and the Chocolate Factory,for example, nasty Violet Beauregarde blows up into a blueberry from sneaking forbidden chewing gum, and bratty Augustus Gloop is carried away on the river of chocolate he wouldn't resist.
