Nirvana for the Chocophile!

If you or the ones in your life adore chocolate, oh, this is the book you've been craving!

There's absolutely no way not to adore this confection of a cookbook. It's a pleasure to look at, almost screams "Martha Stewart!", and every recipe is more mouthwatering than the next.

"Chocolate Cakes" is divided into several chapters to tame your particular chocolate fix. There are quickie recipes to get the chocolate craving tamed fast; a chapter on one layer cakes, another on two layer marvels; and a dream chapter on party cakes that is positively orgasmic for the chocolate lover! (Yes, I really, really love chocolate!)

The family and I tried several, ALL of which were huge hits. I esp. recommend Chocolate Ganache Cake, a melt in the mouth bit of heaven, and Chocolate Toffee Crunch Cake was to die for. We made our own party out of two of the party chapter cakes, both of which used raspberries (chocolate and raspberry, just beyond perfection.)

Did I mention the Mocha Whipped Cream Truffle Cake? Oh, that's next on the "to do" list!

All the recipes are very well written and easy to do - so easy to do, in fact, that even if you've never made a from-scratch cake, if you can read, you can bake these gateaux!

I highly recommend this cookbook as a gift, for the baker in the family, or the chocolate lover. Just make sure someone is up to the task, because there's no way you can read this book without whipping out the pans!

This is probably my favorite desert recipe book so far. I love chocolate and this book really delivers some great recipes. Some very high calorie recipes but great nonetheless. Of the 50 chocolate cake recipes, over 40 of them look very good. I found several of them to have rather strange combinations but that's not the case with the vast majority of recipes in this book. There are just so many delicious looking recipes like the s'mores cake that has 1 lb of candy bars, graham cracker crumbs and …

About this book

There's no such thing as too much of a good thing, as this drool-inducing, photo-heavy cookbook proves. Former pastry chef Klivans (Potpies;Big Fat Cookies) turns her attention to the most decadent of desserts, the chocolate cake, finding 50 different approaches. Klivans orients her readers with a narrative about chocolate production, tips for choosing and using chocolate, and basic tips about ingredient and technique in baking, such as beating egg whites. The remainder of the book is organized by cake type (quick and easy; layer cakes; party cakes), and the recipes run the gamut from a basic chocolate-chip loaf to her chocolate yule log and chocolate-apricot pudding cake with chocolate toffee sauce. Some, like her pavlova with chocolate-covered strawberries, and her trifle-like deep-dish white chocolate peaches and cream cake are not technically cakes, but who's counting? Klivans is nothing if not inventive—a basic devil's food recipe serves as a staple for seven other variants. With deft instructions and highly detailed, clearly written recipes, she guides even the least confident baker to a cocoa-dusted kitchen and full-on chocolate ecstasy. Photos.(Apr.)
