Comprehensive, though a little choppy

  • May 30, 2009
This is very complete and I have little doubt that it will prepare you well for the CompTIA Network+ exam. I thought the test and review questions were very well done and I also liked that it included a CD (though it's a Windows centric CD, which limits its value).

Although there is a 2009 copyright, some of the material here in is obviously much older and seems dated. That's probably fine, because the test surely has the same problem.

As mentioned, this is very Windows centric. The author barely acknowledges Unix/Linux at all and when giving examples of commands assumes that you will be using Windows. I think it is important for network techs today to have knowledge of more than Microsoft, but again, the CompTIA test may not.

It bothers me a little to see Windows flags used as test questions, especially when Unix/Linux semantics are different. But the test may suffer from the same prejudice and if so, you'll need to know Microsoft's way even if you'll seldom use it in the real world.

Covering all this ground is difficult. I could carp about specific chapters and even paragraphs, insisting that such and such should have been explained first, or that you really need to mention *this* if you are going to talk about *that*, but it's nit-picking.

There are things I would have explained differently here and there, but overall the authors chatty style is both enjoyable and informative. You'll enjoy reading this and my minor gripes are truly very minor.
