The action takes place in Atlanta, Georgia in 1975-76. Two female police officers are trying to do their jobs in the midst of the ridicule they take from the male counterparts.
Amanda Wagner and her partner Evelyn Mitchell become partners and even though they are warned off the case by two homicide detectives, they continue. They had been sent to the projects where Amanda was almost raped by a pimp. However, the women subdued the pimp and found that other prostitutes had gone missing. However, since the bodies hadn't turned up, police weren't interested.
This is a time of racial unrest in Atlanta. The first black public safety commander fired the white police officials and replaced them with black men. Although the white officers sued, it took time and everyone felt they were being unfairly treated.
In the present day, Will Trent is one of the most highly regarded officers in the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. He's given an assignment that seems like punishment by his supervisor, Amanda Wagner. She won't tell him the reason why but both he and she end up at a children's home which had been closed but was where Will was raised and where there were answers.
I can't say more without revealing plot but get ready for a ride through scary city and be prepared to meet characters who are gutsy and have a heck of a story to tell.
Since the setting of this novel is 1974-75, before reading, check into the history of the Atlanta Olympics. Since some of this novel talks of the city buying land for the Olympic setting, that would give you useful knowledge and a bit of background.
